Hi, wanted to know how to deal with a work situation without falling into venial sin and following Pope Francis advice to be vigilant so that our way of thinking and acting is not polluted…by vanity, greed, pride.”

The situation: at work we have five persons in out team, three are carrying two because the two feel they only need to do the minimum required that will keep them in their job.

My bad thoughts and reactions so far: to gossip about the poor behaviour, being judgemental, reporting them to management.

All my previous actions have either given me guilt from falling into venial sin or not changed the scenario in any way.

Can I implement the Popes advice here, I am hopeful. Possibly I need to detach myself from being preoccupied by others I work with and focus on staying vigilant to the word of God and practising being the person God wants me to be… Without being polluted by the world by means of vanity, greed and pride.

Should I stay out of others way of living their life even if that means suffering with a heavy workload?

Thank you for any and all advice you can offer.

Reporting them to management is not unreasonable; employees’ failure to perform is a legitimate business matter.
But you need to work on being able to do that without being judgemental (which is difficult, I know, but still necessary), and without gossiping (this one is much easier).

Thank you, I do find it hard to report to management and be fair. Another problem is that management do not act on poor performance if they are doing what is required.

Homilies can open up new thoughts and help unlock the mystery with the help of The Holy Spirit.

The problem with reporting them to management is that you might get seen as “the problem” for raising an issue. I’ve sometimes mentioned it to a manager in a neutral way, like “I tried to involve Jane in this, but she seems to be really busy right now and only could make it to one meeting.”
As the other person said, management isn’t stupid and these situations tend to resolve eventually.

I can think of a few more enjoyable things than talking about Donald Trump and republicans all night. You should try some of them.

Management won’t care about them “being reported” and already noticed how much everyone is doing by now. As long as someone works it out they don’t care. If the project fails all of you will face the blame not just the two.
So forget about them and finish the project because otherwise you will get another handload of unfair worldly justice from the hands of your managers. Let the tricksy abusers in God’s hands.

The only time the management will actually listen on complains about them is when these two actually impede the other members to work efficiently.

One day do not be surprised if these two will get promoted because they are “management material” (since they don’t do much they might as well sit around and supervise others are working). Sense of humor is essential to keep sane at most workplaces. So don’t gossip too much about them they might be your bosses one day. 😜

Thank you for your advice, I am going to do as you advised.

Do good work. Do 8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay. Don’t really worry that the guy next to you is checking their phone or outside on smoke breaks all day long. When you are asked, give dispassionate clear answers:

“So, did Joe contribute to the TPS report reconciliation?”

Answer “Joe missed 5 out of the 7 meetings. I am unaware if he contributed in some other manner.”
