Food for thought: Christmas Cards

Yesterdays homily was given by our parish’s retired pastor. He’s in his 80’s and a wonderful, holy man. He was talking about secularism creeping into our lives. One of the examples he gave of this was our sending Christmas cards with snowmen on them instead of the Nativity. Ouch! I’ve done that in the past. You know, those “cute” cards. Well, not this year. What a great reminder of a simple way to witness to our faith.

Thanks for the post. Also, just to share a tip: save money and buy the cards at your nearest Catholic religious goods/book store. I get my Easter and Christmas cards there and save $$ compared with Hallmark for the same amount.
The win win situation keeps them open, and my cards are always “religious”.
The added bonus is saving the extra money.

Well, I don’t think we have to restrict all our Christmas cards to religious ones. I feel perfectly free to send winter scenes, Santa and reindeer, and other such icons of the season to intimate friends who know me well enough that I don’t feel the need to “preach” to them. However, I do send religious cards to those I think will appreciate them and to those I feel need to be reminded of why we celebrate the Christmas season.

I only send Christmas cards with a religious theme. That’s just my choice. It tells something about me & my family while sending our wishes of love, peace & hope. I have never heard of anyone implying that sending a religious Christmas card would be considered “preaching.” I send cards to my family and a few close friends, not all of them are considered devout or even Church go-ers. I don’t believe I’ve offended anyone just as I am not offended when I receive a card with cute Penguins on a sled wishing me “Happy Holidays!” which is totally secular

I prefer cards to make my friends smile. One year it was three wise men with their camels outside a stable, with a woman announcing proudly “It’s a girl!”
