Well, that’s nice that you can volunteer at your food pantry.

I offered my services to our local food bank, and the lady I spoke with was so nasty and rude to me that I never contacted them again.

I still donate food, however.

If they get hungry enough, they’ll eat it. As long as it’s safe to eat, people needing supplies from food pantries have no business being finicky.

You have to have been safehaven trained to volunteer at ours. Sorry they were so rude to you.

Some needy people feel so “robbed of their dignity” that their insistence on name brand foods is a last ditch effort to feel normal.

Sometimes, it’s a real treat for these people when we donate from our own supplies.

An example: Hubby orders cases of freshly canned fruits from a farm in Oregon. These aren’t your typical grocery store canned goods. These are peaches, pears, cherries and others freshly harvested and canned in a special way, and the cans are huge. Because we order cases of them, we have way more than we can eat at any one time, and it’s nice to be able to feed some other folks with them.

This truly is really good food, and we donate a few cans of it to our local food bank, or my parish food drive, which is really the same thing, as all the donations go to the food bank.

I’m sorry you were treated rudely - that’s uncalled for.

Honestly, the extent of my volunteering, (for the pantry), has been only during that single annual drive. My family has been involved in it for about 10 years now though and have assisted in nearly every facet of that day. It’s a huge organizational endeavor and I’m always amazed at how smoothly it runs.

But boy, talk about an exhausting feel-good day!
Each year we collect, sort & deliver more than the previous year.

I’d love it if you could pm me with that farm in Oregon that you get your fresh canned fruits from! (I don’t know if it’s ok to post that here… I’m still new on CAF)

Besides donating food, I also donate money. Our food bank covers several counties over many square miles. I figure the money can be used for two things: first to buy things they are in short supply of and second to help pay for things like the electric bill, gas for the trucks they use to distribute food, etc.

good thinking. I give what I use if canned goods, eggs, etc. I get those big pkg toilet paper or detergent.

The big packages are difficult to give out. A lot of people who might need it ,like a big family, take the bus and can’t manage that plus the box or bags of food. I doubt they break it up, but ask the place you support.

I think it probably depends on where you get the big pack from. Some places have one big package full of individual rolls of whatever paper product, while some have a large wrapper around smaller packages or even individually wrapped (mostly for paper towels) rolls. For information sake, the packages we get at Costco are done in the latter fashion - paper towel rolls are individually wrapped within the larger pack and toilet paper is in packages of either 6 or 8 rolls (I think 8, but am not 100% positive) within the larger pack.

Probably would make a difference, but you are absolutely correct to say ask the place you support.
