Please pray for my childhood friend Beatriz. She has moderate intellectual disabilities and while she speaks and understands like an average person in both English and Spanish, she has low literacy and almost no ability with numbers.
She was a good student and worked very hard to graduate high school with as little help as possible. She couldn’t score an ACT score high enough to be accepted into any undergraduate program, so she took three years worth of coursework at the community college, registered as an audit because she couldn’t take them as an undergraduate, even though they were considered undergraduate classes.
Currently, she works at a nursing home facility as a certified nurse’s aide. She was homeless for a while and I let her stay with me and watched her study the materials for weeks in order to get the minimum score on the written test for her license. She made it and she passed with flying colors on the practical part of the test.
She works each and every day, taking care of people’s elderly parents, speaking kindly and gently to them, despite the fact that they often abuse her and call her racial slurs. She cleans up their messes, watches their health signs meticulously, and goes the extra mile to make certain they are comfortable and their rooms are nice. She is proud of her work and she rarely complains, even though after six years at this facility, she makes under $10 an hour. She is working full-time at the height of her capacity, and she barely makes enough to pay for her tiny apartment and other bills. She is currently obliged to use public transportation as she hasn’t been able to save up enough to buy a car.
Anyway, she is expecting a baby in early August. Once her paid leave of two weeks, plus her earned vacation time of two more weeks is up, she is facing the prospect of somehow managing to use the bus service to transport her and her child to a daycare provider and then herself to the nursing home, by 6:30 every morning.
I have been thinking and praying about this situation almost constantly and I have to be frank that the injustice of it all makes my blood boil. I hope you will pray for my friend in the hopes that God will find a way to get her a car. She has a driver’s license and should be able to afford the insurance payments, but she needs a break with the cost of the car. She tells me that her baby’s father is trying to help her get the money to buy one, but he apparently lost his job two seconds before she found out she was pregnant.
Please pray that my friend can get a car so that she can get to and from work and doesn’t have to try and take her newborn to Headstart in a stroller in the snow!
