I am starting my junior year in university September 19. I thought for sure the worst is over, but, late this summer, I started rethinking going into medicine after reading what medical residency like and how residents become so over-worked and sleep-deprived that they stop seeing the patients as people. As much as it hurts me to not do my dream job, I am afraid of turning into a monster that cares nothing for the patients and only just wants to get it done and get paid. So, I am now looking into dentistry which gives me the option to start working right after school and has more reasonable residency hours. But, I am starting over again and need to get 100 shadowing hours by the end of this school year. Most dentists do not want to take on a student, even for only a few hours and I keep getting rejected despite being a student at a very respectable school that is proof enough that I am responsible and have a good work-ethic.
On top of that, I need to raise my GPA to get an edge over people. I want to go to the University of Illinois Chicago dental school because of its affordablity and need to ensure that I do not get rejected.
Anyway, please pray for my success this school year. It is really hard for me to admit that I am rethinking medicine on here because, long time ago when I was younger, I was bullied pretty badly on here by other posters for wanting to be a doctor. It is also why I generally don’t create any threads other than prayer threads. By giving up on medicine, I cannot shake the feeling that I am somehow proving them right, even though I am not doing it for the reasons they suggested. I also wanted to be a pro-life doctor in an increasingly hostile world and serve to fight against people who would want us banned from healthcare for refusing to take a life. I feel like, if I followed this path, I would not be doing enough.
