Thank you so much for all this wisdom and insight!! I currently use Billings (I’m unmarried, but have been ‘practicing’ this method for almost one year), but my cycles have been crazy lately, and I’ve been looking for other options by which I can cross-check my results (temperature cross-checks do not work for me because I do not have a set sleep schedule).

I do have a few questions, though…
  1. is the testing (either saliva or vagina sensor) time sensitive like taking your temperature, or can it be done at any time in the morning, and any time in the meeting
  2. Mamacita, have you been using it for 6 years!! During breatfeeding, too? (Because a lot of the devices I’ve looked into say that they won’t work while breastfeeding)
  3. finally, most of these devices tell you when ovulation occurs… BUT you have a window of about 4-5 days before ovulation where you can still get pregnant if you are intimate (due to the length of time that egg and sperm can survive)… how does this device address this??
Thanks for all your help!!

Raes,

No, I haven’t been using mine for 6 years. It was 6 years ago that I had come across it online but didn’t have the money to buy one.

Actually, I found out that they rent them too! I know that might sound um, err, gross, but a little alcohol and you’re all good, right? :o
I didn’t use mine while nursing, I quit nursing tho because NFP was getting to be too much while nursing. 😦

ANyway, my friend that bought hers before me is using hers and she is still nursing her little baby. So, I am guessing you can…feel free to PM me if you do have more questions, I’ll try to help explain it better. :o

And yes, you need to do the saliva testing the same time each morning, before getting out of bed, clean mouth, etc. The vaginal one they say to use after being up and moving around a few hours.

Mamacita, thank you so much for posting this thread! I had never even heard of this monitor, so I looked it up. I was so impressed by the website (which even acknowledges NFP as a natural means of avoiding or achieving pregnancy), and the reviews I read online, that I just ordered mine! As a newlywed who has fairly ambiguous fertility signs, I thought this would be the perfect supplement to my STM observations. I’m so excited to get it in the mail now!

**Gracedupon, Congrats on your new marriage!! :bounce: I am so glad that I posted this thread for people that have never heard of this thing. I hope it works out well for you. Let me know how it goes!! 😉 **

mamacita ~ I am adding this to my wishlist. 😃 Not sure what DH will think since we have the Clear Blue already - ya know I have a tendency to obsess with our fertility. 😊

If you don’t mind me jumping in - I’m still breastfeeding Elise while using it. So far it’s matched well with the CM (well being either it shows an O the same day I get the uberfertile CM). I should say that pre-pregnancy I had the textbook cycles (28 days long, I could practically set my watch to them), and post-partum it looks like that’s where they’re headed again. Not medical advice and your mileage may vary with regards to its accuracy while breastfeeding.

As for the O window, as your cycle progresses it shows “Not Fertile” to displaying “fertility blocks” - the lower the number of blocks, that’s when the O window begins (in my experience, that is). I can’t remember the number of the blocks, but they increase as your body gets ready to ovulate. It does try to predict the O day (“maximum fertility”), but I can’t remember if that’s off of previous cycles stored in the Ovacue or your body. IME, when I have the maximum fertility blocks, I know ovulation is right around the corner. Once I ovulate, it will say “Ovulation Confirmed”. 🙂

(I feel like I should take pictures of the display as I go through my next cycle, lol - I’m terrible when it comes to trying to explain things).

I can get into more details probably tomorrow, right now I’m a bit sleepy; but that’s the nutshell version. If you search my older posts, I made a post about the fertility blocks a while back, that may have more details.

HTH!!

**Hey, that would be a great idea! Like I mentioned before, hubby and I are considering getting some type of monitor to supplement our STM… but it’s a lot of money so we want to be sure. Any help any of you can provide would be awesome.

Thanks again Mamacita for this thread!!!**

zetek.net/nfp.htm

here’s their little blurb on using fertility monitors with NFP. The only thing I don’t like is that they call it “contraception” which is technically inaccurate. But the rest of the info is helpful.👍

**
zetek.net/compare_fertility_monitors.htm**

and here is their comparison of the different types of monitors for those of you in the market. Of course they are biased, lol, but it really does sound like the most convenient (and least expensive over time) option.

I mentioned this to my sister last night and she said you can usually find used ones on Ebay for way less than brand new (like mamacita said…a little alcohol, right?)

Anyway, she andh er husband have their 4th blessing on the way (in under 5 years) so she is planning to get one to supplement their NFP efforts, too.

Hopefully your DH will let you buy it, or maybe he’ll buy it for you. 😉 **

Wow, they want $85 shipping to Canada!!! :(:(:(:(:(😦
**Are you serious??? Mine was ‘free shipping!!’ I would look into that, I know they come from Colorado.

Also, I can’t remember who asked about the notice of ovulation in advance, but I will try to explain my experience thus far as to what it showed during my first month use of it (hence it didn’t know my exact cycles yet).

On day 7 of my cycle the monitor told me “possibly fertile” (which is 3 blocks on the screen), it also said (now this is w/ out it knowing my previous cycles) “maximum fertility: day 13 of cycle”. So after day 7 told me ‘possibly fertile’ I knew to avoid until it for sure confirmed ovulation (which by the way, did take place on day 12 and the monitor told me exactly). So once it confirmed ovulation, the 3 days after that said ‘high fertility’, just like w/ our NFP method tells us (about counting 3 days after fertile mucus). All in all, I have been pleased w/ the advance notice of ovulation.

Hope this helps!!

Mylo, great idea to post pics of the actual screen!!!**

Awesome! If it will help, I’ll do it! 😃 Now I just gotta wait for a new cycle (which should be in a couple of days unless crazy breastfeeding hormones have their say). 👍

I could take some pics of mine, not sure if it’ll show up real good tho on the camera. I’ll try to do that in the next few days.

Okay, gotta say I’m loving this thread! We have been married for just over 3yrs w/ a 2.5 yo and baby will be 1 in a few weeks - so it’s nice to hear from others w/ some understanding of our somewhat maddening experience (really, it gets better as they get older:P)

I may truly consider purchasing one of these high-falutin’ monitors should we be blessed w/ another little one to get us thru the terrifying ammenorhea during nursing.

So, to go a little off course here, since we’re talking about fertility/ ovulation monitors and such, I wanted to ask everyones opinion about determining the optimum time to conceive a particular gender. We have 2 little guys and we’d love to try for a girl. I saw somewhere online (I think the website was choosethegenderofyourbaby.com) where it sold a PH type test for $100.00. The jist was basically testing your mucus on a litmus paper - acidic mucus supported one kind of sperm over the other and basal mucus supported the other kind.

Thought this sounded really cool, but I’d like to know your thoughts or if any of you knows any other methods/tricks so long as it doesn’t cross the line w/ Church teaching. I’ve also heard that taking Magnesium supplement increases the chances of conceiving a girl.

**From what I have read, “boy” sperm swims faster and “girl” sperm lives longer. So, for a boy, have sex ONLY as close to ovulation as possible, the day of is best or within 24hours of ovulating.

For a girl, make love several days prior to suspected ovulation and then not again (otherwise the faster boys will get there first). Gives the boys time to die off:p and leaves the opportunity open for the longer living girls to reach their goal.

Haven’t had a chance to test this theory but hubby want a boy really bad so when we are ready to go for #2 I have a feeling hubby will be paying VERY close attention to my charts, lol.

Oh, I just bought the Clearblue monitor on eBay (used for $20). I was going to start stocking up on strips.

But this Ovacue sounds really good! Now I can’t decide!

I also like hormonalforecaster.org because I can download the program to my PDA.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but Elise was conceived on the day I ovulated. She’s very much a girl. 😛

Any of you hear of or use the OV-Watch? From their website:

**OV-Watch® fertility predictor is clinically proven, patented, and FDA-cleared. It detects the chemical surge of chloride ions on the skin, which is an earlier predictor of a woman’s fertility. **It requires no urine sampling or temperature taking. You just wear it while you sleep.

it is like a big watch you wear on your wrist and comes with some kind of strips you’d need to buy. looks about the same price range as the other sensors, but i thought this sounded cool, especially since they say they can predict the five days before ovulation for those trying to avoid. but i don’t know anythign about it other than what i read. anyone else got some personnal experience? i’m always leary of buying things based on what the people that make it say…

**LOL, maybe it’s the sleep deprivation, but I got an instant visual of all the girl sperm ganging up on the boy sperm…

GIRL SWIMMERS: “you may be faster, but we’re stronger!”

KA POW!! :nunchuk: SMASH!! CRACK!!!

BOY SWIMMERS: “OH NO! They’re coming for us…turn back! turn back!!!”
