So I’m taking a logic class at my university. It’s called symbolic logic. What can you tell me about it? We do a little but of Aristotelian logic in the beginning but switch to symbolic logic. The professor says makes one a lot smarter.

Is this the best type of logic one can learn? Peter Kreeft said in on the Catholic Answers radio program that the right kind of logic is rarely taught in university anymore. I don’t doubt this type logic is good, but my question is if this type of logic is ideal.

Professor Kreeft points out that symbolic logic approaches logic in such a way that is divorced from objective truth. Classical logic and symbolic logic are really the same things. It’s just a difference in approach and expression. Symbolic logic is good for things like computer science. But in philosophy, he argues it led to some dead ends (though lots of other philosophers would disagree).

Buy his book titled Socratic Logic to read along side your course material to see the difference.
