For any Orthodox Converts: Why did you leave the Catholic Church for the Orthodox Church?

Are you sure they were true councils without the participation of the Holy Orthodox Church? :hmmm:

There were many innovations that arose from those “councils”.
Yes, they were.
Sure they could.

You are playing your little “what if” games again. :tsktsk:
I heard Orthodox Churches still are waiting for the Church of Rome to “return” to the Orthodox fold. Until then, no Ecumenical Council is possible. At least, that is what I heard.

Oh, that’s rich. :rotfl:

Please try to reign in your language. 😦
I am glad you think it is wealthy.

As to my use of the word “hell”…

Oh brother Mickey, please, please, please forgive me. I know that we are so much kinder here, and I know that your tone can show me how to do. Will you just be patient with me until I learn? Can you find it in your heart to forgive me for using the “h” word? I really hope you can.

Are synods and Ecumenical Councils the same?
There were seven Ecumenical councils in Church history. After the schism the Orthodox have called local Synods and the Roman Catholics have called gatherings which they refer to as “councils”.

This is not the answer to my question. Please enlighten me.

How will the Orthodox Churches convene an Ecumenical Council?

This is not the answer to my question.
Your question has been addressed. When a council is needed, it will be convened by the Holy Spirit—who proceeds from the Father. 😃

I hope you have been enlightened.

Good day. :tiphat:

Not quite.

How will the Holy Spirit convene a Council? Will He gather the bishops in one place without using anybody?

Yes quite.
Our ways are not God’s ways. We trust in the Holy Spirit.
Still you have not answered my question. The seven Ecumenical Councils were convened through certain personalities with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

If you ask me how the Catholic Church convenes a Council, I can tell you the process without resorting to play of words.

But I know it is hard for the Orthodox Churches to give a definite answer to the same question. The reason is more than obvious.

I believe that an ecumenical council would be convened pretty much the same way that a local council is convened.

Consider: As of 1517, Roman Catholics counted 10 ecumenical councils: First Council of Nicaea (325), First Council of Constantinople (381), Council of Ephesus (431), Council of Chalcedon (451), Second Council of Constantinople (553), Third Council of Constantinople (680), Second Council of Nicaea (787), Fourth Council of Constantinople (869-870), Council of Florence (1431-1445), and Fifth Lateran Council (1512-1517).

But around the time of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), they decided that there had been another 8 ecumenical councils (which had hitherto been regarded as local): First Council of the Lateran (1123), Second Council of the Lateran (1139), Third Council of the Lateran (1179), Fourth Council of the Lateran (1215), First Council of Lyon (1245), Second Council of Lyon (1274), Council of Vienne (1311 –1312), and Council of Constance (1414 –1418).

Apparently, these councils were convened because there was somebody who decided to hold them.

So is this the same procedure Orthodox Churches will undergo in their future Ecumenical Councils? If yes, who will call the shot considering that Emperors are no longer existent.

Wow! The Holy Spirit is now a play on words?!? Shame on you!!!

There may never be another Ecumenical Council after the first seven. Seven were sufficient for the Church. So do not fret about it Stew. 👍

I’m not really clear what you mean by that. Are you’re saying this in response to the statement “I believe that an ecumenical council would be convened pretty much the same way that a local council is convened” ?
