Saturday was my first day back in Liturgy since the election of Pope Francis(I’m Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic). During the prayers that mention the Pope, the priest at church said the names of both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict. He would say, “Pope Francis and His Holiness Benedict XVI.” It felt kind of awkward for both to be in there(although I agree that we should continue to pray for Pope Benedict) and I was wondering if this was allowed? Is it something left up to the discretion of the priest, or should he only be including Pope Francis?

FWIW, my Melkite parish only mentions Pope Francis.

In the anaphora the priest said “for Francis our Pope, for Benedict our retired pope”

FWIW, and as some may recall, the Maronite Patriarch retired in 2011 and a successor was elected. Shortly after his enthronement, the new Patriarch ordered that the name of his predecessor be included in the diptychs. At the same time he also ordered that the name of any living “bishop emeritus” be mentioned (within the confines of his (former) diocese) after that of the current Ordinary. Given that precedent, it came as no surprise to me to hear Benedict XVI’s name mentioned after that of his successor.

I don’t know how it is supposed to be, but my parish only mentions Pope Francis, as does the Roman parish where I sometimes attend daily Mass.

Our priest only mentioned Francis (after a looong pause; he’s still getting used to it).

Thanks! I was wondering because I listen to Mass almost every day after I drop the boys I watch off at school and I’ve only ever heard Pope Francis’ name used.

In the Byzantine Eparchy of Parma we were instructed to only commemorate Francis, the Pope of Rome.
Fr. Deacon Robert Cripps

The Syro Malabar and Knanaya parishes only mention Francis Mar Papa.

We only commemorate Pope Francis. During the interregnum we did not commemorate a bishop of Rome. I go to a parish in the Eparchy of Phoenix.

Our priest (Ruthenian Catholic) only mentions Pope Francis.

Don’t know if it’s “proper” to mention Pope Emeritus, but what the hey, it’s not as though there’s been a whole lot of precedence for the situation. It’s probably fine to do this.
