Does the universe have a start date?

Yes or no.

I don’t need an elaborate answer. Yes or no will do it.

And please, just follow along with me. Don’t derail the thread.

Certainly, the best evidence currently available indicates that the universe began to assume its current form about 14 billion years ago (the “Big Bang”). The problem is that no one knows what happened before this event.

Obviously, the “stuff” that began to expand existed before the Big Bang. We don’t know where this “stuff” came from, whether it always existed, whether it had expanded into a universe before and then contracted, or whether it makes any logical sense to talk about time (and “causes”) before there was motion and time. We simply don’t know.

If you do have any evidence that might suggest an answer, please let us know. If you do, you will be world famous and highly regarded in the scientific community in a very short time.

The best evidence we have now seems to indicate that this particular expansion of the universe is not going to crunch – it will instead continue to accelerate until it runs out of energy.

We don’t know whether there have been previous expansions of the universe that did crunch or whether we are living in the only expansion of the universe. Either way, we still don’t know what came before the Big Bang. We still don’t know where the “stuff” that expanded came from or whether it always existed.

If you have any evidence, I’m all ears…

Does Buddhist count as pagan?

The observable universe is 14 billion years or so old. The unobservable universe(s) which may, or may not, make up the multiverse who knows?
