An officemate recently started a topic on annulment at the office.

She said that she heard about a suggestion on television or radio that that when a man and a woman marry, they really do not know fully what they are getting into …they may turn up not be suited for each other…it was suggested that marriages be simply a matter of contracts. If you don’t like what you got then both man and woman can simply say the contract is off…and they don’t have to pay steep fees for annulments and such.

I don’t agree with this.

For me, its like treating the man and woman like items in a grocery store. If you don’t like it then just return it. As if there will be no feelings that will be hurt or children left psychologically marred in this kind of set up.

I believe that marriage is between man, woman and God. Where does God come in in this kind of contract?

What kind of vows will people be making? " I will love you for BETTER…for RICHER and only in HEALTH…until the next best thing comes along, …or when contract ends…whichever comes first."

Any thoughts to add to mine?

Good for you, Ma. Eugenia!!!

JP2 would have said God’s Word was written in your heart!
You may not know why etcetera but you know why not!

Follow your heart love; therein lies the Holy Ghost!

God bless you Ma.E!
Simon.

These people must be atheists or not believe that God has anything much to do with our lives. Taking a vow before GOD means more than any contract written by MEN!! A man’s word is his deed, or it used to be, and telling someone “I take you for better or worse” doesn’t mean, “until something better comes along.”

Silly discussion to have at work.

And for the record, I know a lot of atheists, many married, and none of them would have been ok with this.
Thank you. I’m very uncomfortable with the disparaging of atheists in such a manner.

Anyway, I agree with the OP. A husband or wife isn’t something you “try out” for awhile and decide to “return it” if you don’t like it.

This is why marriage prep is so very important. And I must give the Church all the credit in the world, or, at least my local Parish and Diocese all the credit in the world here: they do SUCH a great job of marriage prep between FOCCUS, Pre-Cana and so on. It’s one of the areas where they truly go above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak.

It is so often the case that people enter marriage without a reverence for it. The most depressing thing, in my view, is to see people who should have never gotten married. having children with each other, then quickly divorcing or getting an annulment. It creates such a cross for children that they ought not be required to carry, such an avoidable cross.
