For Christians in the UK: "Not Ashamed" Campaign

I found this on another board, posted by a priest of the British Orthodox Church (Coptic). I want to see what others, particularly in the UK where the campaign is aimed, think about it. The website is at: notashamed.org.uk/

My immediate reaction is: It’s about darn time! 🙂 After seeing a lot about the atheist bus ad debacle and a lot of “perhaps crazy/perhaps less crazy than I’d like it to be” editorializing about the immediate ascendancy of Islam over Europe, it has become difficult for the outsider to know just what is going on with Christianity in Europe. An admittedly ignorant American can perhaps therefore be forgiven for conjuring up some pretty horrific ideas about the future of our faith in that part of the world, and hence perhaps reacting a bit too positively about campaigns like this one. Still, any sign that the newly dark continent is waking up from its belief fatigue can’t help but make my poor little heart beat a little faster…

U.S.Americans: Do you foresee a point in time where we could use one of these kinds of campaigns in America? How could we adapt this idea to an American context, keeping in mind the feeling of many that the U.S.A. is already “too religious” as it is? (This idea always makes me laugh, but I guess if you go by self-reported percentages from telephone surveys or something, you could come away with that idea…)

I think it will be a good thing providing from my personal perspective that the following two conditions are met:


  1. *]That it is supported by all Christian communities and that it does not develop into inter-denominational arguments; I fear a campaign like this being over taken by evangelicals/fundamentalists

    *]The stories on the website about those who have lost jobs, been demoted, or penalised in some way or another for wearing Christian symbols or professing their Christian Faith that we get the whole story, i.e. from all parties concerned and not only from the slant of the affected Christian.

I love this. It really can’t hurt anything, and it can only help. I think the UK is beyond hope though.

Will it happen in America? I don’t see it in my lifetime (I’m 31). Sadly, I think it’ll happen in the future. Maybe 100 years or so.

Hey, nothing personal. I’m a member of the clan as well-pure bred Brit here. I have friends over there that I talk to all the time. They just tell me that it seems as though athiesm and Islam are on the rise, so they’re worried as well.

Well it doesn’t look all too good as of right now, but no country is ever beyond hope.
 
My concern is that campaign this will be essentially an Evangelical/Fundamentalist/Charismatic thing, with all that that entails.

I think I would want to approach it differently…
