Update: I just wanted to thank you all for your continued prayers, I received the call today that I was approved for my apartment and will be moving in in late October or early November. I cried tears of joy in class when I found out. God is great!

I am beyond overjoyed for you! I moved out at 19 because of my mother’s abuse. My dad, crying bless his heart, helped me move in to a house he found for rent. It was a huge blessing, and very hard at times financially, but I made it. As an introvert I loved having my own place --a safe place!!!-- to come home to after work, university, and socializing. Keep the faith sweetie.

I’m now 41 and have been married 17 years to a man who has given me two amazing daughters, nursed and continues to help me through more bouts of cancer than I can recall, and stands by my side as I still deeply mourn the death of my dad eight years ago (cancer). Anyhow, my point is, after countless years of abuse I escaped, even with my dozen plus surgeries and hospitalizations, I’ve been able to get a Bachelors of Science and a Masters in Clinical Counseling. My undergrad degree took nine years because I had so little money but I finally got there. You can do this!! And as a domestic violence and abuse counselor and Victim Advocate, I advise you to PLEASE ALWAYS listen to that gut feeling about people. Read up on domestic violence red flags (i.e. between partnerships and friendships) and if you see more than two, at the most three red flags, TURN AWAY. You deserve people in your life who uplift and love you. And again about the gut feeling, which I call my ‘harm alarm’, you don’t have to have a rational reason for avoiding someone; remember our brains and nervous system are incredibly complex and often know danger is near even if the reason isn’t immediately clear. Up thread someone listed a variety of advice; with all due respect, I would advice spending a few years decompressing from your abuse, figure out how YOU want your household to run, and learn the responsibilities of being fully independent. It’s not for everyone, but my five years living alone made me an infinitely better wife and mother. Just some thoughts, no pressure.

I SO VERY MUCH wish you well beautiful one and if I lived near you I’d love to help get you started with basic household stuff. But, if you want, send me a private message with your email and later your new address and I will write to you. Old school style, even, because going to the mailbox day in and day out is a collection of massive amounts of junk mail and bills. There’s nothing better than handwriting a letter and getting one in the mail. But I’m an old soul…if you’re more comfortable with email that’s fine. And if you have a good support system and have no need for a pen pal no worries. Either way I wish you well from the depths of my soul. I’m still haunted by my childhood abuse and since my beloved dad’s death it has come back full force—he was then one who loved me, nurtured me. But I got through everything, abuse, cancer, cancer, cancer (haha–gotta keep my sense of humour), even losing my dad and my brother just being paralyzed (cancer–genetic, duh) I still wake up and put one foot in front of the other. Praying the rosary is my deepest comfort, followed by my husband and girls. Take it day by day, hour by hour, even a minute at a time. God will give you want you need in the present moment. May God richly bless your new journey!
