For Harry Potter Fans (NO SPOILERS)

Seeing as there are enough threads for bashing Harry Potter on this site, I wanted to start a thread for the HP fans (so if your going to tell everyone how evil Harry Potter is find the appropriate thread).
So whatever you want to say about the books (favorite in the sereis, fav charactor, theories, ect), this is the place.
My two favorite books in the sereis thus far are 3 and 5. I liked that in number 3 there was a break from Voldemort. that book really kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Same with number 5.
My favorite charactor in the sereies is Sirius Black.
Anyone going to any of the midnight parties on friday? My mom and I are going to the barnes and noble midnight party. Can’t wait. Already have my Sirius Black t-shirt to wear:thumbsup:
 
I have plans to go to my local Wal-Mart for the midnight release on July 21st - I don’t feel like driving 17 miles away from my home to get the book.

As far as the books go, so far, my favorite seems to be Goblet and Half-Blood Prince. OOTP was such a hard read for me, but after seeing the movie tonight (excellent, BTW), I’ll be picking it up again to read the parts that weren’t shown in the movie.

Favorite character: need you ask???

I will get up early on Sat, go down to walmart & get the book, snacks etc, plop myself down on the couch (or porch swing if its nice) and read, read, read! My sweet husband is going to be watching the kids, feeding them etc so I can have “time with my book”.!

My favorite book(s) are 2 & 3. I love the “morality play” at the end of CoS.

My favorite character is Hermione. But Snape is a close second (and I think that’s more because of Alan Rickman than the actual character :o ).
 
IMO The order of books from best to worst is

Goblet of Fire > Sorcerer’s Stone > Order of the Phoenix > Chamber of Secrets > Prisoner of Azkaban > Half-Blood Prince

regarding the movies, the order is

Order of the Phoenix >>>>>>>>> Sorcerer’s Stone > Chamber of Secrets > Prisoner of Azkaban > Goblet of Fire

Half-Blood Prince was extremely disappointing for me. Beyond the obvious Snape/Dumbledore fiasco, I thought the book was utterly terrible, and my appreciation for the series in general took a nosedive. After seeing the OOTP movie, though, my hype has been rekindled tenfold! 😃 Really, the movie was absolutely spectacular. In fact, it’s my first choice for BEst Film of the Year as of now 👍
 
Order of the Pheonix and Prisoner of Azkaban have been the best made movies so far in my opinion.

I was disappointed with the Goblet of Fire movie. IMO, Goblet of Fire is the best book so far in the series, and the movie was a let down. They left way too much out, and it felt rushed overall. Yet, they could have put more time into certain parts like the maze, if they didn’t have ten unnecessary minutes of Harry being chased by a dragon.

HBP was more of a set up for the Deathly Hollows more than anything. Rowling needed to put in much needed backstory to tie together some loose ends so the story arc could move forward to the final delimna of the horcruxes. Some people have said it is just one book broken into two, which I tend to agree with.
 
I thought that the makers of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie didn’t do that great a job with the story line. Sure most every thing turned out the way it did in the book, but there were a lot of things left out. I went to see it at 12:01 AM when it came out and was very disappointed.😦
I like the books better than the movies anyway
 
🙂 ahh harry potter my favorite book and movie so far was the 3rd. i am in love with the series! the new movie is great, too. i’m going to Barnes and Noble for the midnight release!👍
 
So for those that have seen the new HP movie, is it pretty faithful to the book? I loved the first two movies, I thought the director just captured the spirit of the books so well. Prisoner of Azkaban being my favorite book I was really exited to see the movie. I was soooooooo disapointed with it. I felt the director just completely butchered it. It’s only redeaming factor was the casting of Gary Oldman as Sirius (awsome choise). I didn’t have high hopes for Goblet of fire, and it’s a good thing because it wasn’t a very good movie. Like someone else said it felt rushed and they left way too much out. Not to mention the fact that they just about wrote Sirius’ charactor out. I felt that the last two movies have sacrificed story for action. My mom and I were apalled at the grave yard scene in GOF. Didn’t have any suspence like the book.
So, I’ve been hearing good things about this new movie, and I was wondering if it’s better than the last two (fingers crossed that it is).

I prefer to read the books as J.K. wrote them, not the “Americanized” edition they publish here in the States. The U.S. editions have the spellings and idioms Americanized. Plus the UK editions have way cooler covers.

Yeah, I love the title ‘The Philosophers Stone’ much better than the American version.
 
Considering all the other books that are out there Harry Potter is a great series - it emphasizes many virtues, lacks sex, shows magic as fiction, and shows a stark divide between good and evil.

I mean look at the teenage sex-tion of the local Borders (or B&N for that matter. I think that we should have an ID policy - no one under 18 may purchase this book. If under 18 parental approval is necesary. Today for instance I found a simply delightful book</sarcasm off> called the Pillow Book. It chronicles the beauty</sarcasm off> of sex, breasts, periods, and is located in the teenage sex-tion for easy reference.

In fact I wish there were more books like Harry Potter - when the new HP novel comes out it will be the first novel that I have read in months.

I have all six books of both the American & British series. I have also ordered the UK 7th and have the US 7th on order (well my mom does :D).

By the way, any Latin fans here? You can order Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapidis and/or Harrius Potter et Camera Secretorum from either Amazon US or Amazon UK. I have yet to read them but they come highly recommended - and I’m thinking about ordering at least the first one.

The wife and I saw the movie saturday night. Overall we really enjoyed it. I found myself thinking about it more and more on sunday with my appreciation for it growing.

While watching it, I realized how much I had forgotten about the story. With the others I could pretty much tell where they were faithful and what was movie added. But apparently it’s been too long since my last read.

I enjoyed it. Perfect casting/acting for Luna and Umbridge. It was funny though because my wife has a friend who looks a lot like Umbridge.

I think unless you had read the books The “Order of Phoenix” Movie would have been a disapointment-at least that was my wifes reaction. It is a VERY dark movie with very little of the levity we saw in previous movies. As with the Goblet of fire a lot was left out.

My book is beng delivered Saturday Morning but I will be out of town. I have a feeling by Saturday noght everyone in the world will know wheter or not Harry dies.

I read the books before the movies come out to brush up, and the same before each next book comes out. It helps me remember alot, and to make good comparisons between the book and movie.
 
I’ve already told my friends that I shall be totally unreachable Saturday…I’m going to curl up on a chaise lounge in the study and read my little heart out. 👍

Personally, I adored the fifth movie, and have already seen it twice…though I do wish they’d put Tonks in it more, she’s one of my very favorite characters.

My heart broke for Sirius and Harry…I wanted them to be able to be a family!

And I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Snape. As someone who is surrounded by so much love from her family and friends…I feel very sorry for someone with no one. Like Mother Teresa said, the biggest disease is feeling unwanted and unloved.

But I did love, in the 5th movie, the emphasis on love, and how love is the power the Dark Lord knows not. Brilliant!

Exactly. I felt these two actresses captured the characters as they were in the book, at least.

My opinion on the movie:

I understand it needs to be cut. As a result, the movies feel like a whirlwind whisk through the story, whereas the books feel like a total immersion into this world of Harry Potter. That’s an inescapable problem, and I don’t fault them for it.

What I do fault is the usual habit of adding irrelevant things in, and cutting other things, which always seems to happen. For this movie, I didn’t notice as much, because it’s been a longer time since I’ve read the book-- but I noticed it in other movies, and also in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Specifically for the movie:

I felt sometimes they really do a disservice by making nothing whatsoever subtle. For instance, the two central portions of the plot which surround the veil. In itself, it should be mysterious.

In the beginning, the movie sets it up well for the veil-- when Harry sees the thestrals, remarks that he sees them, and only Luna responds that she sees them. As a result, I think it was unnecessary when Harry hears the whispers at the veil for Luna to explicitly say, “Harry, I hear them too.” Especially since they didn’t cut Harry’s parting conversation with Luna, which in my opinion, in the book was much more powerful and could have easily been included. On second thought, I went and looked-- perhaps it wasn’t such a big difference, but I felt it made it more mysterious.

The second point: the death of Sirius Black. In the book this is left much more ambiguous. Bellatrix shoots one failed (red) spell at Sirius, and then catches him off guard with a second (unidentified) spell, which hits him squarely in the chest and sends him through the veil to his death. In the movie, it flat out has her use the killing curse, and he sort of dies and is then enveloped in the veil. I had read the book as if saying that he passed through the veil and died-- however, I can accept that he possibly disappeared through the veil in this sense. What I didn’t like was how it changes the sense of the book-- which is that the veil is the reason Sirius died (if Sirius had been hit by a killing curse in the book Harry would not be expecting him to appear from the other side at any moment), to making the spell the reason.

As you can see, I nitpick. 🙂

I already have my book reserved. I don’t think Harry will die, but we’ll all know for sure in less than a week!!!😃

My favorite character is Hermione. Emma Watson is so hot! lol

Well Ill have to admit that Bellatrix is a lot hotter looking than I ever imagined!🙂

I read an intveriew with Helen Bonham Carter and she said she only took the small part becuase she got an email from Rowling telling her her part would be a lot bigger in the next two movies. Carter als admits she is the one that insited bellatrix be sexed up.
