Hi,
I have attempted many times in the past to learn to play the piano, with some success, but have not played in years. Mainly I get frustrated with sight-reading at some point, usually having to do with difficulty in timing and rhythm. I would like to find ways to improve my reading of rhythm notation and playing the notes in time. I can read the notes and play the correct keys, but I struggle with timing a great deal, and usually I end up discontinuing because of a seeming barrier in timing and rhythm. Any prayers for help in overcoming my rhythmic reading and playing difficulties is greatly appreciated. Also, in addition, you could pray for all people who are trying to learn a musical instrument or singing. Thank you for any prayers for this intention.
God bless you.
Amen.

Prayers for your intention.

Something took me years to learn, when sight reading or learning a new piece on the piano, slow down. It is easier to build speed after learning the piece, but relearning fingering, phrasing, timing is more difficult if your imprint the muscle memory incorrectly.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

St. Cecilia, pray for us! :harp:

Keep at it; it’s worth it. The timing will come eventually. Just take it slow. I experienced the same thing, and found that it does get better!

Here are my suggestions as a music educator.
  1. Join a drum circle class where you can put your body in sync with rhythmic improvisation and experience playing a variety of repeated patterns without your having to read the rhythms. Start with the kinesthetic aspects of playing rhythm first not the visual.
My beginning students can play a lot more complicated rhythms then they can read. (Oral Tradition)
There is no substitute for ensemble experience where all players have to keep the given beat. Many solo piano players miss out on ensemble experience.
  2. Take beginning Snare drum lessons where you are only reading a single line of music/rhythm. Tell the teacher your basic rhythm goals. There are countless graduated rhythmic studies you can play that will help you become comfortable with countless combinations of single line rhythms. When your inner beat is trained and successfully linked with a single visual line of rhythm it will begin to transfer to the more complicated visual symbols of a piano score. Practice and Pray.

practice with pieces you well know…like Christmas carols…easy pop songs.
You know how the rhythm goes already…count aloud to yourself as you play.
As you gain proficiency… your sight reading will come along. Then the new pieces won’t seem so daunting.

Praying for your intentions.

I play the Bass Clarinet, but what helps me is taking each note slow, using a metronome; and then speed it up. It still daunts me, sight reading is a tough skill to master! You are halfway there by trying.

Dear Saint Cecilia, one thing we know for certain about you is that you became a heroic martyr in fidelity to your divine Bridegroom.
We do not know that you were a musician but we are told that you heard Angels sing.
Inspire musicians to gladden the hearts of people by filling the air with God’s gift of music and reminding them of the divine Musician who created all beauty.
Amen.

The Musician’s Prayer
Anonymous

Oh Lord, please bless this music that it might glorify your name. May the talent that you have bestowed upon me be used only to serve you.

Let this music be a witness to your majesty and love, and remind us that you are always watching, and listening, from your throne above.

May your presence and beauty be found in every note, and may the words that are sung reach the hearts of your people so they will draw closer to you.

May your Spirit guide us through every measure so that we might be the instruments of your peace, and proclaim your glory with glad voices.

Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

You might buy a metronome until you get your counting right.
This is exactly what I would recommend doing, too, plus slowing down and taking your time.

Prayers said for you. May God bless your efforts.

Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen
