For Help With Confession

I posted here recently about relationship issues and prayers needed to assist me with getting my life straightened out and returning to the Lord and his Church. I ask for prayers to continue as I struggle with making good decisions with my ex-girlfriend in regards to her desires to re-start a relationship, and that I will have courage and wisdom to do what is pleasing in God’s eyes. I also requests prayers for courage and discernment to make a good confession this week, and that God will direct me to the right priest at the right time. I am not feeling very courageous right now about the idea of some things I have to confess, but confession needs to happen this week. Thank you.
 
Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

There are really good audio files (some on CDs for purchase) and posts/blogs about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The bottom line is that God has unlimited Forgiveness and Mercy. God knows your sins and forgives you before you even go to Confession. So why go to Confession? Because God told us so in the Bible and it is Church doctrine (see CCC 1456.)

One piece of advice I would like to offer: don’t priest “shop”. The priest is an instrument of God and not the one who will forgive your sins. I’ve talked to many Catholics about this subject and some of them tell me they’d rather confess to a priest they don’t know presumably because they are ashamed of their sins. And rightly so! I’m ashamed every single time I go to confession to confess my sins but, unlike my Catholic brothers and sisters, I actually would prefer confessing to the same priest if at all possible. I know I can call the parish office and set up an appointment to confess my sins to that specific priest but I also believe all priests can hear my confession and, if I am truly contrite, offer absolution.

Do not fear confession. Eagerly look towards to opportunity to receive the forgiveness from God and come closer to Him. God Bless you.
 
Don’t wait for confession to do an examination of conscience. Some say to do this everyday. I wish I could say that I do, but, sadly, I fall short. Also, examine your past relationship with your ex-girlfriend… What went wrong in the first place? Only go back if a different result is likely to happen.

Other than that, I will pray for your guidance and support. Be blessed each day.

The Holy Spirit is prompting you - so, surrender and follow the path that God is leading you too. You could always make an appointment for confession. It will be more private and won’t feel so intimidating - more like an appointment to discuss things that need someone else to direct you. The priest will help you, just be honest and tell him that you need his help in making a good confession.
