The huge stumbling block that mormons cannot get over is the CHARACTER of their “Prophet.” There is an extensive paper trail leading back to the con-man and ne’er-do-well Joseph Smith, who concocted the whole fantasy out of a “peep-stone” in his hat. Contrast that with the character of the founder of the Catholic Church, Jesus Christ Himself. Who will you believe?
You quoted excaliber in this post, hopefully he’ll correct me if I’m wrong but I think Excaliber is addressing the attitude of JW’s and saying that all the arguments presented here will have no weight with them. To me it seems he’s stating how you would have to approach them if you wanted to convert them.

And that is probably true. What I’m saying is that the whole mormon idea of a great apostacy collapses because of the dishonesty of the founder of mormonism. Neither mormon “scriptures” nor “authorities” can prove or demonstrate when this general apostacy took place. This is their only basis for the necessity for a “restored” religion. mormonism is just another man-made sect.

they feel that they are the only ones active in door to door minestry.
Gee. You should look around. The LDS have quite a door-to-door ministry. Some of the Evangelical churches do too. Some Catholics groups go door-to-door too (the Blue Army has some) and some Catholic apologists even argued on street corners (I think the arguments were published in a book) plus others offer apologetic programs on the radio). The thing is that there are many ways to evangelize and no one seems to have a “corner” on it.
It is Jw belief that the Catholic church literaly CANOT do this the way they do.
We aren’t talking about the Catholic Church.
Like God is directing there door to door preaching work.
Are you sure? I believe that Jesus (hmmm–JWs equate Jesus with God?–I thought they thought of Jesus as “a” god) told His disciples to “preach the Gospel to all nations”. I didn’t think He said “go door-to-door proseltytizing”. There are other ways of “preaching”, some just by example.

BTW, are you so certain that door-to-door proseltytizing is the only way? What about being good example? What about caring for the unfortunate and feeding and clothing God’s children? What about Catholic Social Services? What about the Catholic mission of EWTN that spreads the Gospel via satellite, radio, internet to the whole world? What about all the foreign missions of the Catholic Church? Could it be that the Catholics are not concerned with “winning arguments”, as much as they are concerned with winning souls?

And yes, it is about the Adventist movement–both the JWs and the LDS came from that movement.

AMDGtoo,
It was my impression that excalibur was simply telling us what the JWs believe, not what he believes.

Im just saying that you can’t go bear hunting with a fishing pole.
I don’t want to upset Lds that’s why I don’t speak for them.

However open your eyes and see the reality is my point. You say hey
some guy named Charles Taz Russle can’t just start a religion without apostolic athority… The jehovahs witnesses can’t be successful attacking a Church that traces its roots back to Christ???

guess what…HE DID IT ANYWAY. I understand your logic…my point is that 6 million jw’s have a completely different mentality. Dare I say that even more Lds think differently.
you can’t speak korean to a mexican, you can’t win over jw’s with ancient writings and tradishon, and dates.

They do understand the bible.
They definitely understand the preaching work. And they are ACTIVE, they understand scripture put in action. Just speak there language.

Adjust the argument to something like this…If there was no apostasy
and Jehovah is not guiding Jehovahs witnesses, why are jw’s the only ones preaching door to door acording to Mathew 24:14.

OH MAN!!!
that will get any jw’s attention!!!
oh yea that would have gotten my attention!!! and of course don’t put it on a website, Jw’s aren’t alowed to come here. The ones that do, many times are on there way out anyway. Door to door would be awsome, the very act of going door to door preaching…
especially by a Catholic…is technicaly impossible in the eyes of a jw, because Jehovah has to guide the preaching work…and if they are the only ones doing it, they think Jehovah is guiding only them.

Talk scripture, and don’t do it online…and your talking JW language.

Pleeeeease don’t go to a jw talking about saint such and such said this or that, or pope such and such said this or that…because they soooooo don’t care about that. And they think you quote saints and popes because you can’t quote scripture. Its wide belief that catholics don’t know scripture.

Anyway THAT’S how you discuss the great apostasy. and boy oh boy would it work!!! 😉

If your interested in saving souls, don’t fish with the wrong bait.

The bible says become all things to all people so that you can save them.

Don’t talk to a Jw as if they were catholic.

Can someone please help me understand how I can better explain this!?!?!?!?

How about this…despite all that you said the Church is doing, I did not know ANY thing about The Catholic church untill a year ago.
WHY?

Jw’s are not alowed to watch E.W.T.N or go to catholic answers.com
however explain this to me…I worked with lots of catholics…I mean there is only like a billion of you 😉
And knowone told me much of anything. I have gone to countless catholic homes in door to door work…knowone told me anything.
Why is that?

Jw’s will come to you, just be ready to talk BIBLE…that’s there language…BIBLE.
In your last post there was no scripture, you made a good point…just make it in there language.

I agree that there was (and continues to be!) an apostasy. People continue to fall into apostasy, as those that are taken in by gospels contrary to what Paul (and Jesus!) preached.

Paul and the other apostles were combating heresy and apostasy in their teachings and exhortations at the time. In so doing, they were exercizing the authority Jesus left them. It is an early example of that authority at work.

So, if the apostasy had not occurred at the time of Paul’s writings, the LDS and the JWs must believe it happened afterwards. Of course, this is the belief of each church, that the apostasy occurred following the death of the last apostle… but when?
I will be glad to tell you. I haven’t a clue how the JWs define the Apostasy, and I am not interested to know either. But I can tell you how LDS define the Apostasy. Since this is a perennial question that comes up, I have written a lengthy article in my Blog to deal with it, and address all the objections that are commonly raised against it. You can read it here. Have a read through it, and if you have any further questions bring up and we will talk about it.
I don’t believe a Great Apostasy occurred because it would have had to have been complete and total, which I think is simply impossible (and let’s not forget Jesus’ promises).

So, do the LDS and JWs not feel the slightest discomfort that perhaps they are the ones who have brought about apostasy?
I don’t know about the JWs, and don’t care either. But I assure you that I don’t. Read the above article to find out why.
I’ve tried to put myself in the shoes of those that lived at Joseph Smith’s and Charles Taze Russell’s time and I just think that I would fear and reject them when considering Jesus’ promises and the warnings of false prophets to come.

Jesus is God, Smith and Russell were men. Why are the LDS and JWs so confident that a Great Apostasy that extinguished all Christianity actually occurred? Smith and Russell were MEN! How can Jesus’ word be improved upon?
Jesus was God, and Joseph Smith was His prophet and Apostle. No idea who Russell was, and don’t care either. The Apostasy occured because the Bible tells us so, and modern revelation tells us so too.
I still haven’t heard an explanation for this belief. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
Which is why I originally posted this thread. It would seem to me that although the bible speaks of apostasy, Jesus promised the gates of hell would not prevail against His church and that He would be with us always and that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth. This, along with the warnings of false prophets, seems to make lunacy of listening to a couple of 20th century men preaching a new gospel… I was hoping to learn an explanation of why someone would overlook all of this and cast their lot with these men.
Read my article to find out the answer to all of these questions.

Jw’s and LDS are not like Catholic and Orthodox where you share most of the same teachings.

Jw and Lds from my view are simular only because they are both
RESTORATION churches…
Actually, JW is not a “restoration” church. “Restoration” is something that can only be brought about by revelation. Joseph Smith brought that about by direct revelation from heaven. There were visions; there were ministration of angels; there were the restoration of priesthoods by heavenly messengers; there were additional scripture given by revelation to augment and/or correct doctrine, which are canonized. That is why the LDS Church is called a “Restoration” Church. As far as I know JWs don’t make such a claim, therefore they cannot be described as a “restoration” church.

Jw’s will come to you, just be ready to talk BIBLE…that’s there language…BIBLE.
Now we get to what version. I have several from the King James to the Duoay-Rheimes to a few others that are also faithful to the original manuscripts. I don’t use the New World Translation that I understand the JWs use and there is a reason for it–it differs substantially from all the best translations of our time. And no I didn’t use Bible quotes in my post. I didn’t need to and besides that unless the quotes were from the NWT, JWs will not be convinced. The verses must come from their Bible alone.

BTW, the JWs that have knocked on my door (and that of my neighbors) mainly use The Watchtower 😉

Restorationism

"Restorationism, sometimes called Christian primitivism, frequently describes religious movements that believe pristine, or original Christianity is restored in themselves to an important degree. "

Stone-Campbell: Churches of Christ, Independent Christians and Disciples of Christ (Many Campbellites joined Mormonism in the early years of Mormonism)

Christadelphians

LDS movement (includes all branches of Mormonism, LDS, FLDS, Community of Christ, Strangites, etc)

Adventism

Millerites and Sabbatarianism

Seventh-day Adventists

**Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“They believe that Russell was not the founder of a new religion, but that he restored true Christianity from the apostasy that Jesus and the Apostle Paul foretold. They believe that they are the true Christians and all other Churches departed in a Great Apostasy from the original faith on major points. Like the Millerites, the Witnesses believe that the original faith could be restored through a generally literal interpretation of the Bible and a sincere commitment to follow its teachings.”**

Charismatic Restorationism (see the wiki link above)

I would say the same thing about Charles Taze Russell, he was also a crook and a con-man, a man of defective character, the founder of a false cult.

Now your talkin!!!

The king james bible is good to use, or just use your bible. If they see you with ANY bible you can start a good discusion.

If translation comes up in the discusion…GENTLY introduce them to scolarship and ask who wrote there bible, and what were there credentials.Be carfull when getting them to question there organization, if you get them to think independently of the organization…you won.

But don’t attack the organization!!!
Just use the bible to explain your position, they love the bible and LOVE to study…they will keep coming back for more if you do it correctly.

Don’t worry about translation!!!
Show them that Catholics know there bible, they will go back and tell the rest of the group…mabey even talk about it at the kingdomhall.

If it gose from discusion to you attacking there organization…IT WON’T WORK, and you will make them very angry. To a jw there organization is viewed just as highly as Catholics view Holy Mary herself.
MAN!!! I wish I could do it!!!
Call me next time they come 🙂

I understand what your saying.
However the revelation that the JW’s claim is SCRIPTURAL. The bible talks about “THE time of the end” and a knowledge that will be abundant during that time. Jw claim to have that knowledge. So God supposedly revealed to them the truth about the bible.

I never understood the Lds’s position. If the LDS is what the first christians were…what is the book of mormon? did the first christians have that?

That is about the same as the Protestant position, who describe their movement as a “Reformation” rather than a “Restoration”.

We believe an open canon of scripture. We believe that one of the charicteristics of God’s true church is that it is able to receive revelation, and add to the canon of scripture, as the ancient true churches were able to do. Also, we don’t claim that the LDS Church is just an identikit of the first century church. It is a new dispensation of the gospel, in which additional truths have been revealed and will continue to be revealed in the future that may not have existed in the first century church.

That’s interesting. Do mormons speak in toungs and have healing abilities? How much of what the early church did can mormons do?

One other question. How do mormons explain the miracles of Fatama that 70,000 people witnessed? Can mormons do anything simular?

Yes, those gifts do exist in the LDS Church; but they are not intended for public display, nor to “prove” to people the truth of the Church. That was not their purpose in the early church either. Faith does not come by signs; signs follow them that beleive. Miracles come according to the faith of mankind. We don’t perform miracles to prove to people that the Church is true. Jesus and the Apostles did not either.

I didn’t know much about the miracles of Fatima, so I just looked it up on the Internet to find out. I cannot comment on the miracles of Fatima; although to be honest I am sceptical of it after reading up on it a little. We don’t claim to have a monopoly of miracles. I think that miracles can happen to people of other religions according to their faiths and prayers. But the impression I am getting is that you are looking for signs and miracles to bolster your faith, or as proof of the truthfulness of a religion. That is not the purpose of miracles; and God never gives miracles to people in order to make them believe. Signs follow faith; faith does not follow signs.

zerinus

Truly not the case, as believing in miracles such as Fatama is not required to be a Catholic.

Hi Z,

You are skeptical when there is 70,000 witnesses and have total faith in JS with a handfull of witnesses ( half being relatives )???
