For Mary

1. Finally, we must do everything for Mary. Since we have given ourselves completely to her service, it is only right that we should do everything for her as if we were her personal servant and slave. This does not mean that we take her for the ultimate end of our service for Jesus alone is our ultimate end. But we take Mary for our proximate end, our mysterious intermediary and the easiest way of reaching him.

Like every good servant and slave we must not remain idle, but, relying on her protection, we should undertake and carry out great things for our noble Queen. We must defend her privileges when they are questioned and uphold her good name when it is under attack. We must attract everyone, if possible, to her service and to this true and sound devotion. We must speak up and denounce those who distort devotion to her by outraging her Son, and at the same time we must apply ourselves to spreading this true devotion. As a reward for these little services, we should expect nothing in return save the honour of belonging to such a lovable Queen and the joy of being united through her to Jesus, her Son, by a bond that is indissoluble in time and in eternity. Glory to Jesus in Mary! Glory to Mary in Jesus! Glory to God alone!

These are the concluding paragraphs in St. Louis de Montfort’s little treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is only a supplement added to suggest how we might practice True Devotion at the time of Holy Communion. By God’s Grace, may the Church continue to listen to the Holy Spirit as He continues to teach the complete Truth of Jesus, through Mary, and may we as Church carry Jesus to the world, through Mary, with Mary, in Mary and for Mary, for the Glory of God alone!

Thanks for this! I was especially struck by these lines, given how people refuse to give due honor to Mary or disregard her and her Son completely:

I think God wants us to acknowledge His beautiful creature and His plan of salvation that comes to us through her… HE could have designed another way, but this one is His and it’s BEAUTIFUL–AMEN!!!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is a good conclusion isn’t it? Out of the fullness of his heart, St. Louis De Montfort speaks to us, as brothers and sisters of Jesus. All the saints learned from Jesus to have a meek and humble heart. In obedience to Jesus’ words: “Behold your Mother”, they did as John did. The saints took Mary into their lives.

All the saints took Mary into their lives, that is: they lived “through Mary”, “with Mary”, “In Mary” and “For Mary”. Many of them served her in “upholding her good name when under attack”. Others “attracted people to her service and to this true devotion” … “spoke up and denounced those who who distort devotion to her…” and even now in our time, some are “spreading this devotion”.

By His Grace, may we also listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and do whatever the Charity of Christ impels us to do us to do, for Mary, since all that we do for her we do for Jesus, she keeps nothing for herself. We say “Mary” and she says “God” ! United with her we are united with Christ, that God be glorified now and forever!

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, God has designed in a the most Beautiful and Perfect way His plan of salvation: to send Jesus to us through Mary and to enable us to return to Him through Mary. The Church teaches all graces come to us through Mary (whether we are conscious of that or not). Too many Catholics seem not to have learned this Truth from Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. We need to listen more prayerfully.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church can help us all to better understand how to hear more deeply the words of Jesus, to John (and to all of us): "Behold Your Mother:

CCC 971 “All generations will call me blessed”: “The Church’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship.” The Church rightly honors "the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of ‘Mother of God,’ to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs…

We need to do as John the beloved disciple did and take Mary into our lives. The word “intrinsic” is significant. It means “essential”. Mary is not merely a nice “extra”, she is essential in God’s plan for our salvation. The more we learn of her, the more we learn of God’s plan for ourselves. She is a human person as we are, and again to quote the Catechism:

MARY - ESCHATOLOGICAL ICON OF THE CHURCH

CCC 972 After speaking of the Church, her origin, mission, and destiny, we can find no better way to conclude than by looking to Mary. In her we contemplate what the Church already is in her mystery on her own “pilgrimage of faith,” and what she will be in the homeland at the end of her journey. There, “in the glory of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity,” “in the communion of all the saints,” The Church is awaited by the one she venerates as Mother of her Lord and as her own mother.

In the meantime the Mother of Jesus, in the glory which she possesses in body and soul in heaven, is the image and beginning of the Church as it is to be perfected in the world to come. Likewise she shines forth on earth until the day of the Lord shall come, a sign of certain hope and comfort to the pilgrim People of God.
