For Mormons and Protestants

Take a look at this prayer / meditation card / Title “If you would like to know God”

Seeking your comments on it after you read it. Not baiting here, it hit me hard. In all honesty I hope it helps you with insight as to why the Crucifix as a Symbol of faith for us Catholics. The deeper I have gone into it, meditating on it, I see the Crucifix as core to our very being, what took place on the Cross / Message to us etc… The painting that is on this card tells it all I beleive, but you have to read between all the lines, really think about it.

I give tours each month of our church here in Utah and so many ask “it seems like Catholics focus more on the suffering Christ than the resurrected Christ”

My eyes get wide, my heart expands a bit and I let em have it, ……. in a loving way.
My favorite part of the tour is when we are standing under our life size and very real looking Crucifix. We had a group of young women come through from the LDS church just last month. While they were looking at the Crucifix I asked them “How does it make you fell looking at that?” On said “I feel depressed” and another responded “it should!” I responded “very good” and the others did not have a clue I believe. I overheard one girl say “this Church is beautiful, not like ours”

Not having the Cross is one of ways they separate from us. It was a bad choice to do so as the message of the Cross is the message of Jesus. When you think about it Protestants have the cross but shy away from the Crucifix so that’s were it began to get watered down, to get distorted. The focus for the Mormons became the resurrected Christ keeping them in a perceived state of happiness disregarding the suffering, having to delve into their own sin, keeping it at arms length. The Protestants have the empty Cross, the Mormon went a bit further in the decent to having no crosses at all. Although they did in their beginning but it made them look too much like Catholics to bear it, the one thing needed for salvation….Christ’s death on a cross.

On the next tour I will have those cards!!!

Perhaps you are not aware that the use of the Crucifix is not distinctive or unique to The Catholic Church.

Frankly I don’t know of any (for sure) that display the Crucifix. I’ve seen it in the Orthodox but can’t recall it anywhere else. I have been to your church but don’t remember seeing it. How is it displayed? Easy to see? What churches do you know for sure that have a Crucifix?

In our sanctuary, there is a large crucifix which is suspended from the ceiling over the altar.
My father, a Lutheran pastor, always wore his crucifix over his alb. It is one of my most treasured possessions.
In the Lutheran parish where I grew up, over the altar in the chapel is a crucifix of the risen Christ, perhaps the most moving crucifix I have ever seen, as it depicts both the suffering and the risen Christ.

Most protestant churches display the cross empty, as Jesus is gone from there, Catholic curches show Jesus on the crucifix to remind us of his sacrifice for us.
The protestants say that it is Christ raised that saves them. The Catholic knows that Jesus died to save them.

Yes, Jesus was born to die
we have life because of His death…

If you would like to know God, Look at the Cross. If you would like to love God, look at the Cross. If you want to serve God, look at the Cross.

***If you hope for eternal Happiness, look at the Cross. If you wonder how much your faith demands of you, in humility, poverty, charity, meekness and every virtue, look at the Cross. If you wonder how far your own unselfishness should go to bring others to Christ, look at the Cross. If you want to understand the need for self-denial, look at the Cross. If you wish to live well, look at the Cross. If you wish to die well, look at the Cross. ***

But…If you want to know what you are worth in the eyes of God, you have to look towards the Crucifix!

I know several non-Catholic churches will not display even a bare cross as they consider that idol worship.

Actually, it is both is death and ressurection. Easter cannot happen without Good Friday. Good Friday means nothings without Easter.
