Nehal El Naggar, a professor at the American University in Cairo, talks to AsiaNews about improvements in the status of women. Education is essential for this process. Teaching religion at home is also crucial. In the West, integration and respect for the law are the best tools against terrorism.

He’s not wrong. The more educated people are, the less likely they are to fall into extremism. I mean there are obviously exceptions but by and large groups like Al Qaeda and Daesh target people who are uneducated, desperate, and easily manipulated to fill out their rank and file. That’s why in many countries their first targets are often schools and other places of learning and why quite often when they’ve destroyed that infrastructure they replace it with their own warped education system.

Assuming that “education” means an ACTUAL education where the person is thought to think for themselves and think critically.
That is not happening today in many cases in many American schools.
