Ouch.

It sounds like you are saying modern Catholic’s who practice the rosary are “babes of the faith”. I couldn’t disagree more. I could name numerous examples for you, but it’s really not hard to find some yourself, if you’re seriously looking. I’d encourage you to do this. . .it can be very inspiring.

Years ago when I was a new believer, I told a Pastor about my love for CS Lewis, to which he responded, “I’ve outgrown him.” The more I grow in Christ, the more certain i am that that man never really understood CS Lewis (though he was a good Christian).
freerf…this is an inspiring thread, very refreshing…to find Protestants like you praying the rosary…just keep at it and graces you will find are boundless.

I do not know about agentgray…but as I am growing in my faith…i am praying the rosary more now.

Thanks, Mck…in the Catholic baptism, water is poured on the forehead 3 times…as for infusion, I think this refers to the infusion of God’s grace at baptism. You are right, it is kind of childish…and besides, isn’t the purpose one is there is to celebrate God’s word or to worship…not to listen to snide remarks?

Well, you’ve opened yourself to Mary…keep at it and ask for her help…and she will be there for you…i am not sure, but have you heard of the Divine Mercy prayer…I do not want to burden you but it might be a prayer that may interest you.

I’m always open to new prayers that can help 😃
I’m not familiar with the Divine Mercy prayer I would love to know it!
This is what I do every night before bed while holding my rosary:
Sign of the Cross
Apostle’s Creed
Our Father
Three Hail Mary’s
Glory Be
Oh my Jesus
Memorare
St. Michael
Personal Prayer (Where I get specific like Help me with a test, find a job, etc)
Sign of the Cross
Sleep 😛

Hi, Mck…

I usually pray the rosary on the way to work…there is a rosary on the radio in my drive time to work…so I follow it…I also pray the Anima Christi and the Prayer to the Wound on the Shoulder when I wake up…before going to sleep…I pray the St Michael…a personal prayer…

I pray the Divine Mercy during break or lunch break or whenever I can. It is also on EWTN local affiliate stations, so sometimes, I follow it through the radio.

When I do not forget, I try to pray the 3 pm prayer of Mercy, the hour of Christ’s death.

Here is a link to the Divine Mercy: thedivinemercy.org/message/

Here is the chaplet, easy to follow using the rosary:
  1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary and The Apostles Creed.
  2. Then on the Our Father Beads say the following:
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
  3. On the 10 Hail Mary Beads say the following:
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
(Repeat step 2 and 3 for all five decades).
  1. Conclude with (three times):
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

The question is this: what do you make of this victory and it’s realtionship to this type of prayer? I personally don’t know what to make of it.

Catholics, sorry but this question is directed to non-catholics. i think i pretty well know what your opinions will be. 😉
freef, the only true victory over sin is an abiding faith in Jesus Christ. Everything else is a counterfeit which provides only “temporary fixes”. God alone is the one that scripture tells us to pray to. Angels are God’s messengers and He will direct them according to His will. Mary was a human being and though she played a special role while here on earth, she does not act as God.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[c] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Eph. 6

I hear the truth in what you’re saying, but don’t really agree with the application of that truth.

Every “true Christian” has “true victory”. But even with this victory, Paul himself speaks of a “thorn in the flesh” as I do here.

Surely you don’t believe prayer, good works, and love for your neighbor is “counterfeit” and provides only “temporary fixes”. Of course not! 👍

An abiding faith in Jesus is the foundation to all we are as Christians, but what follows that faith is the house in which we dwell. There are many ways to strengthen that house- to strengthen ourselves as spiritual warriors - reading the bible, prayer, love, etc. - I’m sure you agree.

These things fortify our spirit and help us to fight the “thorn in the flesh”.

I agree with you about prayer to Mary, however. (easy Catholics, please don’t start to argue this point here)

But what do you make of the following scipture, Luke 11:15-23:

But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

👍

Freerf, if you’ve had a victory over sin in that very important dept., that’s super, but the above caution by cooter is consistent with Jesus’ warning, “When you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.” (Matt. 6:7)

Would you want your friends, parents, siblings or true love to address you with repetitious formulaic speech? I doubt it, because you and they have a relationship. And it’s no different with God: you’re not a prayer machine and He’s not some sort of giant auditory slot machine where the right type and number of incantations will hit you the jackpot.
some of the psalms are very repetitious. and they are prayers. the purpose of the rosary, is not repetitive prayer. it is designed (like the AMIDA in Jewish prayer) to bring you closer to your creator. do you ever wonder why you see orthodox Jews swaying at the western wall? they are in a deep state of contemplative prayer. the apostle peter also we are told, went into a trance where he recieved a vision, during such a time of deep prayer. there is nothing wrong with this. we also have many other prayers, that are not as repetitious. ive never envisioned myself as a machine, or God as an auditory slot machine. your view shows a very limited knowledge of what Catholic prayer really is. but… we can help. Peace 🙂

I was raised Baptist actually, but when I went through some really rough times a while back, my aunt (who is Catholic) suggested I simply try praying the rosary, and it really did help me. Regardless of what denomination you are, knowing that Mary is praying for you is so comforting that you really can’t help but feel more at ease, and I continue to pray the Rosary today.

love this response freerf! CS Lewis is an excellent example. i cant remember if it was his last book or what, of the narnia chronicles, where aslan is telling them to go further in, and the further they traveled into narnia, the bigger it became. i cant remember the actual phrasing. its been too long. but the rosary is like that. the longer you practice it, the more insights you receive. into the life of Christ, walking like Christ, loving your neighbor etc. i remember my friends mother telling me how when she got done praying the rosary, she half expected the Lord to give her direction to lay hands on and heal someone. also she expected to see the Blessed Mother. Catholicism was not even a thought in my head at the time. but one thing i remember. my attitude that they were just praying repetitiously, went out the window. i knew there was something more to it than that. keep praying. you may also like the chaplet of divine mercy. Peace to you and yours. and blessings on your spiritual journey. 🙂

Unfortunately for you and all other non-Catholics who use this verse to preach against the Rosary, it doesn’t apply to the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, or any other repetitive prayers. Here is the translation I prefer:

"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
(Mat 6:5-15 RSV)

As you can see here, Jesus is saying not to heap up empty phrases like the Gentiles (Pagans) did because they think that by saying so many words, it will make them more likely to be heard. Well, Catholics do not pray the Hail Mary and other prayers repeatedly in such devotions because we think that our many words will make God listen more. No, we repeat those prayers because it is conducive to meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary. The mysteries of the Rosary are the scenes that we contemplate during each decade (series of 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Mary’s, 1 Glory Be, etc) are most often scenes from the Gospels. Here is a link on how to pray the Rosary and it includes the various mysteries:

ewtn.com/faith/teachings/maryd5.htm

My take on the Rosary is that it is intended to help us remember Jesus’ life while on earth and at the same time we are asking Mary, whom we believe to be alive in Heaven, to intercede for us so that we may be more like Jesus whom we are contemplating in these mysteries.

I don’t know if I have adequately addressed your concerns or not so here are some good links that may help you:

Perhaps I should clarify what I was referring to when I mentioned “counterfeit”. I was referring to going in prayer to anyone or anything other than God. The result of going to any spirit other than God can provide only a “temporary fix” at best because the one prayed to was not God, but only His counterfeit. I really didn’t word that well at all.

Sure - if I’m understanding you right, you would in agreement with the scripture I posted from Ephesians 6.
I agree with you about prayer to Mary, however.
I’m glad you agree with that. 🙂 I hope that you agree too that praying to angels is not a practise that God teaches us in scripture.
But what do you make of the following scipture, Luke 11:15-23:

Before I answer that, I’m curious as to why you posted that here. It’s taking us away from the topic at hand - or do you see something there that pertains to your situation and I’m just not seeing?

I can only speak from personal experience. What I’m about to say, you’ll have to take me on my word or there is no point in going further. The following is truly my understanding of what I experienced.

I’ve been an active protistant for near a decade now. i’ve been struggling with lust that entire time (as do 90% of men) and failing often. About six months ago, maybe a year, I started combating lustful thoughts by praying “hail marys.” (why did i start? Through a family member’s influence . . .)

Here is the part that shocked me: the thoughts and desires fled. Fled. (Yes, I’ve prayed to Jesus directly for help many times! Of course.) Never have i had this direct and immediate effect. I was shocked. and so I continued and experienced more victory than ever before (in my lifetime) Did find that my relationship with jesus hindered? No, i don’t believe so, and I’m inclined to think it possibly improved. . . I don’t know. Honestly, i don’t know. I only know i felt closer to Him as a result of the purity.

I believe we can only go so far with intellect. ultimately, we are all our own spiritual “thermometers” and must prayerfully consider all things, reflect on them, bounce them off Gods word, which is what i’m trying to do. I understand the Protestant reaction to this type of post - i’ve been there for years and years and I think it’s wise. (I can think of no one in the bible who prayed to anyone but God) However, the truth is, I’ve abandoned faith in my intellect and rather rely on God for guidance. If a hail mary helps me fight lustful desires, and brings me in closer communion to Him. . . . . .I would be a fool to simply ignore it. Wouldn’t I?

Hope that clarify’s my use of the scriptural passage.

Yes, I remember that story vividly.

“Aslan,” said Lucy, “you’re bigger.”
“That is because you are older, little one,” answered he.
“Not because you are?”
“I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”

Hi Freerf…well, contrary to what alot of protestants believe or what is told them, Mary does not point to herself, she guides all to Jesus her Son…to be closer to Him…and you praying the Hail Mary’s is a manifestation of that.

Hi freerf,

I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement. I had an experience very similar to yours, except for me the sin in question was anger.

As a new Protestant-to-Catholic convert, I started saying a Hail Mary every time I noticed my temper starting to rise – and my anger vanished entirely. I felt filled with peace and close to God. Sometimes I felt Mary’s presence as well. I had prayed directly to God about my anger in the past, but with little apparent effect. Why God chose to work this way I don’t know, but I expect it was Jesus’s way of introducing me to his mother.

After about six weeks of this, my evangelical Protestant husband noticed that I was no longer getting mad at him all the time and asked what happened. I got to tell him it was Mary. I think that finally convinced him that I was not, in fact, fraternizing with demons. 😃

Like you said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Also, “By their fruits you shall know them.” (Matthew 7:20) Satan doesn’t produce virtue. God does. And sometimes he uses his angels and saints to bring it about.

Thanks for sharing your story!

Thanks for the response. This is essentially what i’m conflicted with. Underneath it all is a common sense concern with any prayer to anything besides God.

I am always encouraged to hear the effect of prayers. It doesn’t matter whether it is related by a Protestant or Catholic. Thanks for the sharing, it is very touching. I am not much into Marian devotion but I have never heard anything negative spiritually from those who ask the intercession of Mary. I tend to think that it is a mystery especially how the incident in Cana can repeat itself today.

As already often mentioned, the main thrust of Marian prayer is to bring us closer to Jesus. I am no expert in this but if it achieves that objective, I would gladly accept it with great gratitude, even if it is a temporary fix. In any case how true it is – what we experience is very often temporary; after a while we fall again - thus the need for constant prayers and intercession, putting into faith that eventually we will overcome.

God bless.

I am Catholic. As I was growing up, I prayed the rosary just because my mother made me. In my twenties, I prayed it maybe a couple of times, and when I did my mind was always wandering about the many things I still had to do and that I’d rather be doing those things instead of saying the rosary. If I happened to turned on the radio and the rosary was on, I would change stations and listened to music instead. Until a few months ago, I do not know what happened, but I started thinking to myself, “I have to pray the rosary”; it took me another couple of months and a marriage crisis to finally start “praying” the rosary. Now, I can’t stop. I pray it every day. I feel it. It’s not just saying the same things over and over again; it’s saying every singe Hail Mary as if it was the first. And like Fr. Corapi says, “praying the rosary is praying the Gospel”. It’s meditating about the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is just another of the many gifts of the Catholic Church. God bless!!!

Thanks for the response. This is essentially what i’m conflicted with. Underneath it all is a common sense concern with any prayer to anything besides God.
Hi freerf…I’m an Anglican who was raised in the protestant tradition and I struggled with that for a few years. But I love praying the rosary and while praying it brings me closer to Mary, even more important - it brings me much closer to Christ.

A few years ago, I had a problem with mice in my attached garage and I prayed and prayed and prayed. I even had an exterminator come up…did everything I could do…and I still had mice. Finally, in absolute desperation I cried out to our Blessed Mother asking her to please pray to her Son…she would not have wanted mice in her little house in Nazarath. I have not seen a mouse since. I believe that the Lord was teaching me to ask Mary to pray for me.
