For Non-Believers. Has the Philosophy Forum convinced you God Exists

This is a poll not a debate. I can see from the various comments to the threads on this Forum that the answer is no. However, many read the comments and do not actively participate. That is why I have put up the poll. I will put up other polls for believers after Christmas. Have a nice Christmass everyone and drive safely. 👍
Fortunately I came to knowledge of God through other means. Personally, in terms of philosophical insight, I have found that many of the arguments presented for Gods existence have been lacking in one way or the other insofar as rational justification is concerned. Although I have come across some good arguments and I feel that this forum is important in so much as showing the world that Catholics are engaged in rational discourse and are not afraid to be rationally scrutinised. Unfortunately one or two forum members I have recently spoken to do not feel the same.

See, this is a good thought but as my science teachers and other scientists have said, it is impossible to make inorganic materials organic.
Uhm…not sure what you mean here. Organic compounds are compounds that contain carbon. Are you saying one cant add carbon to substances that dont have carbon?

That is incorrect. It used to be thought to be impossible to make something organic from something inorganic. That is not the case anymore. That theory (vitalism) was disproved in 1828 with the synthesis of Urea, an organic substance, from inorganic substances.
Ok well then our technology can do it

But can an exploding super nova with nothing but rocks and energy do it?

What i meant was that no matter how hard we try, we cannot turn a non-living thing (i.e. a rock) into a living thing (i.e. plant, animal, human)

I know how engrossing some topics can be. But some of you are getting way off the O.P. A little " rambling " is normal but don’t turn it into a thread within a thread. You can always start a new thread and we can all see it develop in the proper place and take part too. Thanks 👍

I am trying to find out if any chain of discussions here led anyone from non-belief to belief. Does that make sense? 🙂
It does.

I must say I haven’t found the discussion in this forum to be persuasive. Though I will say that it has given me information from which I can start to build an understanding for one’s thinking.

When it comes to differences of views two of the formats in which those differences are regularly juxtaposed are a private dialog between people and a debate. In many debates it seems that those involved are saying what they can to get the crowd that is already on their side to cheer them on and avoid letting the other side appear to take any ground from them; a type of theatrics. In a personal dialog performing for the crowd isn’t as much of a factor. Some of the discussion I’ve observed in this forum seems to be more like the debates I’ve watched and hasn’t been persuasive to me at all.

Organic compounds have actually been found in outer space.
Well that’s interesting.

But how does that organic matter develop into a human with body systems and parts that are sooooooo complex (i.e. the eye, brain, nervous system, reflex arcs, blood) how does this all come from organic matter that apparently looks and has the features of coal and petroleum?

I would think it’s very rare that anyone changes their entire world-view just from participating in a discussion site. I think they are:
  1. Fun;
  2. A source of information incl. links and so on;
  3. A place that allows you to gather your own thoughts in responding.
No discussion site is a substitute for doing serious reading and thinking on serious subjects.

One Specific kind of nature can become something different when merged with another nature at the atomic level. Think of it like ingredients which can produce different tastes depending on what you use. That is what physics is like.

You would have a more powerful argument if you asked how physics alone can explain the fact that our eyes are teleological and meaningfully ordered to the qualitative end of “seeing”, in a universe that supposedly has no objective purpose and meaning. That would be a better thing to point out than the complexity of objects. Complexity is an irrelevance. its the objectively meaningful qualities that we experience in the universe that should concern you as a good philosopher.

So order would be probably a better argument. A cut up pile of logs doesn’t just get blown beside a house or cabin by the wind nor does a straight row of trees get blown in a straight line by the wind in a pasture. So how then could a planet system or a galaxy or, as we have used before, the qualities of the eye be put together by an explosion or wind?

All of these had to have come from a creator. A lumber jack for the cut up wood pile and a Christmas tree farmer for the lines of trees. And God for the universe and the most ordered thing in the world…the human body.

Please stick the OP’s purpose. Numerous off topic posts may cause the thread to be closed.

Nobody said that an eye is actualised by a gust wind. Lets continue this on another thread.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas.

25 percent is much better than I would have thought. 👍
