This question is only for my Orthodox brethren.

When I was Orthodox NOT in communion with Rome, I did not believe in Purgatory. I always thought it was a strange belief by Catholics, but I never thought to call it a heresy, and I never knew a fellow Copt who called it a heresy. At best, it was considered an “error” by the Catholics. During my swim across the Tiber, as I gained more knowledge, I learned to separate the DOGMA of Purgatory from the Latin doctrine of Purgatory. As a Catholic, I don’t accept much of the Latin doctrine, but I DO accept the DOGMA of Purgatory.

I notice some EO view the Latin doctrine of Purgatory as a heresy. Though I myself don’t accept much of the Latin doctrine, I sincerely do not understand your basis for claiming it is “heresy.” Can you please explain? Thanks.

Blessings,
Marduk
