For philosophers

[liturgy96]

Not just for those with degrees in such; also for those with an interest in it

With that said, I especially want to pray for philosophers because of my bad experiences with philosophy at times I don’t want to share all the nitty-gritty, but suffice it to say that some of my relationships have soured ever since I started becoming more open about my interest in philosophy, especially with my efforts to study such to improve my understanding of the faith. What keeps me going in my study of it (and my studies in general) is my passion for philosophy and my friends who are philosophy majors I truly love to play around with ideas and my friends encourage me to develop my potentials.

I especially pray that philosophers truly engage in their work in the spirit of truth and charity. I pray as well that their field not be an occasion to mock others or to bring them down but instead be an opportunity to hold up a mirror for society to examine ideas and judge if they are in accord with the truth or not.

St. Thomas Aquinas, philosopher and writer par excellence, pray for us!

Anybody with strong opinions about life can call themself a philosopher, and for ten generations, many have done so, with the result that the entire profession is now a jumble and to an extent discredited.

It is time for a “renaissance” in the profession.

This is not true. Universities don’t just hand out degrees to “anybody with strong opinions about life.” It’s a rigorous discipline.

liturgy96, you might like reading some contemporary Catholic philosophers like Peter Kreeft, Edward Feser, and Alasdair MacIntyre if you need an antidote to the atheism and materialism that dominates contemporary philosophy.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins my Mother;
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful;
O Mother of thy Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy clemency hear and answer me.
Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with Thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

PRAYER OF
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
Before Study

Creator of all things,
true Source of light and wisdom,
lofty origin of all being,
graciously let a ray of Your brilliance
penetrate into the darkness of my understanding
and take from me the double darkness
in which I have been born,
an obscurity of both sin and ignorance.
Give me a sharp sense of understanding,
a retentive memory,
and the ability to grasp things correctly and fundamentally.
Grant me the talent of being exact in my explanations,
and the ability to express myself with thoroughness and charm.
Point out the beginning,
direct the progress,
and help in completion;
through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
