A priest once told me that doubt was healthy for a growing Catholic, that the only opposite of faith is no faith at all. I’m still on a religious journey, trying to find answers (which flood was Noah’s flood, the historicity of Adam and Eve, did Egypt lick their wounds and wipe the Exodus from their records, etc.), and throughout it all I find myself worried that my faith may find a toppling point or that I’m clinging on desperately to straws like a drowning man.

And so I ask of you to pray that I may find strength of faith, and for all who desire the same.

The people who have doubts may not even know what to say, Blessed Lord,
because they are confused.
They are caught in the midst of a violent crisis of faith,
so uncertain and doubtful.
They are going through a difficult time
in what touches the depth of their belief.
They are almost tempted to give in
to impatience and despair.
Something within them cries out for You,
yet You seem not to be there.
They have broken away from many childhood beliefs.
They have decided to let their faith pass through the filter
of their personal experience.
Suddenly, they may find themselves too far from you,
from security and certainty.
If they still turn to you, Blessed Lord,
it is because they have not yet lost
the hope of finding
an exit door
for their spiritual anguish.
They begin to realize
that by themselves they will not be able to overcome
life’s ambiguities and contradictions.
We all know the mystery of You continues,
and that our faith-existence is a challenge
to be embraced.
The light of Your occasional shadowy presence
may show those who doubt that the crisis comes
from the depth of their maturity,
from the depth of their faith.
The irony, Lord;
there is a crisis of doubt
only because there is faith.
Perhaps they have become too demanding
and too positive.
Open all of our hearts, Lord, and especially the heart of Samwise21,
to the right attitude
when confronted with questions
of our faith.
