For the first time in my life, the priest mentioned artificial birth control

Yesterday, the priest wove very delicately into his homily the teaching of the Church regarding artificial birth control …

I am hoping this is the beginning of a new trend.

Has anyone else here noticed any similar change in homilies at Mass?

For the record, is he newly ordained, or has he been a priest for some time?

It is sad to think that this warrants a post on the forum. 😦

Not that you shouldn’t post it. Just that there are priests out that that don’t talk about this.

Our priests mention it several times a year. And this isn’t a change, they have been doing it for years. 👍

Sometimes it is good to remember how blessed our parish is for such wonderful priests.

We had a Msgr who retied a couple years ago talk about it.

Our current priests have mentioned it a few times too.

No, at the more orthodox parish I attend (that I now consider my home parish) the main priest does mention things like birth control and abortion, but at the parish we’ve gone to for years, never, ever do those topics arise. Well, to be fair, sometimes abortion gets mentioned around the anniv. of Roe v. Wade, but not even always then.

I think the younger the priest, the more orthodox he will be. I’m excited for my sons because I think their experience of Mass will be different from mine.

Never mentioned here, and I’ve been attending Masses in this part of the world since 1989. :crying:

It does get a mention during “marriage preparation classes” (= the local version of “Pre-Cana”), but that’s for a grand total of 15-20 minutes. 😦

Never gets mentioned here. It’s rare when I ever hear a priest say anything that you’re not supposed to do.

It’s not the kind of subject that gets talked about when there are children and young teenagers around. The priest would need to word things very carefully.

But I think it can (and should) be done.

They can at least promote any NFP classes that are going on in the area. That’s at least a hint.

I suspect that might be a reason this isn’t brought up in homilies. I know when we have members of our RCIA who are under 16, the instructor covering the sacrament of marriage has to temper the discussion accordingly. (I still don’t understand why we sometimes have 10 year olds in RCIA but it’s happened several times!).

I think a Priest can speak about life issues, including same sex attraction, without getting too graphic. But clearly given the confusion, it is necessary for Catholics to be informed and understand the point and reasons behind the teaching. I certainly didn’t understand the prohibition of ABC until long after I converted. I knew “Catholics don’t believe in birth control” but had no clue why not or how this teaching fits into a consistent life ethic.

I opened this thread assuming it was something like a Priest told you birth control was ok while you were in confession.

This was a nice surprise 🙂

I have never heard contraception mentioned in a homily that I can remember. Same for premarital sex, abortion, or pornography. I believe very strongly that these things should be mentioned with tact in church even in the presence of young children. If the children are too young they wont be paying attention or know what is being spoken of anyway and if they do understand a little of what is being said then be sure that Victoria’s secret, Hollywood and all the rest of the slim in are society are already targeting them.

These things are destroying families and should be pounded on every week in church if not every day at every mass!

There are ways to talk about it without exposing children to topics that they shouldn’t hear.

Our previous priest wasn’t very good at it. There were many a time that I wanted to take my, then, young child out of Mass. And boy, the questions in the car after Mass? Not something I would like to go through again.

When he left and our new pastor came, the new pastor showed that you could talk about those topics without causing too many questions from the younger crowd. 👍

There is a sex shop within a short radius from where I live (gone are the days when sex shops could only be found in sleazy parts of the city), a restaurant that I ordered a take-out from about 2 months ago, shares the same small parking lot. My eight year old asks, “What is that (pointing the shop)?” After a small shock, I said with as much casuality as I could muster, “Oh, That’s a store, son”. Bried pause, then, “And what do they sell?”:o I think it should be borne in mind that a homily should be aimed at a general audience and that if material not appropriate for kids is touched upon, it should be done in a subtle fashion as to fall under the little ones’ radar.

I don’t think any of this needs to be worded so carefully. It is God’s commandment to us to go forth and multiply - it’s easy to celebrate the fact that Catholics are not supposed to interfere with God’s blessings of children! It’s not as if the priest is going to whip out a large photograph of an aborted child, after all. All he really has to say is something like, “And I remind you that faithful Catholics do not use birth control.”

If your kids need an explanation, then EXPLAIN!

Our priest introduced the subject by discussing the meaning of the Good Shepherd and what sheep do and how sheep behave … and the authority of the Good Shepherd.

And who is the Shepherd and what is the shepherd’s crook/staff used for.

The he segued into various papal encyclicals and their length and degree of difficulty of reading them.

Humanae Vitae is short by encyclical standards.

He handled it extremely tactfully, but it was very clear to the adults present.

I don’t know about EVERY Mass, but we should hear about it on a regular basis. I think that the Catholic trend of not discussing sex with our children until they are already in puberty is just wrong-headed. I’d rather have my children understand what is going on around them, and hear it from ME, rather than their peers or the predatory media.

👍 Nice!

And is he recently ordained, or just very orthodox?

Our priests do mention it quite routinely. That being said, they also often discuss the sanctity of marriage as a heterosexual institution, even though such a concept is not currently under threat where I am (homosexuality is still nominally illegal), but I imagine the international trends do concern them. 🙂
