David Berman, the singer-songwriter, poet and cartoonist best known for the 1990s-2000s band Silver Jews (of which I was a fan), died yesterday on the eve of his upcoming tour with his new project, Purple Mountains, which was due to start this weekend.

No cause of death has been officially released, however his friends have posted on Twitter that he committed suicide. Berman had a history of depression, had been in rehab for substance abuse, and had survived a past suicide attempt in 2003.

Please pray for the repose of his soul. Thank you.
Eternal rest grant unto David Berman, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

And may those mourning this death be comforted, and Jesus wipe every tear from their eyes and help them to persevere in this life, until all meet again in heaven.
