May the Lord welcome home the soul of Stanislav Petrov, who died in May, but whose death was only reported yesterday. In 1983, Lt. Col. Petrov, as the command of an early-warning bunker outside Moscow, got an alert of 5 incoming ICBMs from the US. Interpreting it as a malfunction due to the small number of missiles launched (which it was, the early warning satellites misinterpreted the sun’s reflection off of clouds over North Dakota), he ignored the alert twice. Had he not, it is very likely that higher-ups would have authorized a mistaken retaliatory strike against the United States, and World War Three would have broken out.
Praise be to God that Petrov was where he was on that fateful day.
Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death,
Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
And my perpetual light shine upon him,
And all the departed who died in thy friendship.
