I’m rather perplexed at why somebody would write a couple of revisionist history books and think it proved anything about the Church, but the fact is that it’s happened. Though the books are in the fiction section in bookstores, please pray for those who see the show or the books and don’t realize that it’s a fictional account of events, especially those who are looking for an excuse to leave the Church or not to come back to it or come for the first time. While there’s no mistaking who anti-Catholic material like this ultimately comes from (and it’s fairly stark here since this seems like a very desperate thing to try), please pray for the author and all those involved in its television production so they may be freed from this as well. As always, I cannot recommend The Chaplet and Divine Mercy and the novena to Our Lady Untier of Knots enough.

It’s funny - I watched Wolf Hall when it was shown in the UK earlier in the year, and I rather found my Catholicism strengthened…

FWIW, I think the books/show/plays are more pro-Thomas Cromwell rather than deliberately anti-Catholic, though. (If you want proper anti-Catholicism, read some of Hillary Mantel’s other work!)

I concur.

Some earlier thoughts I had in an earlier thread when the show had just aired on PBS:
I don’t think the miniseries was anti Catholic, really almost the reverse.
Catholics are shown as mown down by a system that has no more use for them, but hold to their principles in spite of everything. Meanwhile, those who take over from the Church are shown for what they are.
STM for example, faces his death with courage and dignity, whatever his past might have been (and despite H8’s doing everything to shame him – having someone play a flute at his beheading, can you imagine??).
By contrast, Anne Boleyn is allowed as much dignity as is possible in a death by beheading, yet is subjected to whispered comments about being “handled by men.”
Really, WH depicts the period for what it is.
ICXC NIKA
ICXC NIKA.

I agree. And even though Hilary might have hoped to be pro-Cromwell, he was to me actually devious and a master of manipulation.

It strengthened my faith also. St. Thomas More is such a hero to me.

Some posters really got upset almost insinuating one is not a good Catholic for having read the books or watching the BBC presentation.

It’s good to hear that it is not as bad as I thought it was, though still please pray for the creator, if nothing else than for her statement that “I think that nowadays the Catholic Church is not an organization for respectable people.” I’m going into college for history on Friday so I should have known better, though my high school world history class was really bad.

Let’s offer prayers for all those producing or being mislead by anti-Catholic material, then.

My aunt who was very anti-Catholic, enjoyed the DaVinci Code. It taught her lies that just gave her more Anti-Catholic ammunition.

Good luck with your college history. She definitely needs prayer since she had a fairly strong Catholic upbringing and education. Maybe she will have a “revert” moment.

Praying for all those who despise the Catholic Church and her teachings, that they may have a conversion of heart and learn to love and do God’s will through the ministry of our Church. Amen.

Gracious and merciful Father, please come to their assistance.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

Praying for all those producing anti-catholic material. Also praying for those being misled.

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
