Stuff like this is why I miss New York City…

I was commenting on this in another thread.

Question: Is this a mass? that is being described here? I notice there is Eucharistic Adoration and Vespers as well.

What is the “new Evangelization”?

My questions are addressed to anyone who knows something about the Catholic Underground.

My campus minister helps run Catholic Underground North. Many kids from my high school are very involved with it. I would love to go one day.

I don’t know anything about Catholic Underground but it looks like Eucharistic adoration and benediction with some type of concert afterwards, followed by Compline.

The picture gallery clearly shows a couple of hundred people on their knees adoring Jesus in the monstrance on the altar. The Church looks spectacular. there are only a couple of Churches like that in Atlanta. It looks like they move to the basement for some kind of concert and probably return to the Church for compline. What a way to spend an evening, huh?

The “New Evangelization” is, in part, the Holy Father’s call to witness to the Gospel in the third millenium through all means availble to us, including technology and responsible use of social media.

Thanks.

Catholic Underground is easily the best Eucharistic adoration and worship service I have ever been to in NYC or elsewhere. I always try to attend this adoration whenever I can. They take worship to a level that I don’t find elsewhere in NYC. In fact, at one such service, I was so deep in worship that I spoke in tongues for a brief while; I haven’t spoken since and had not spoken for many months before that happened.

Oh so it’s a charismatic service?

This is how the worship is like -

I love it!

That looks awesome. I love Eucharistic adoration especially when others are in the chapel. Every time I go I have this experience…not a physical flush…but a calm excited peace, if that makes any sense. I experienced it the first time I ever went to adoration as a skeptic just to prove to myself it isn’t real…but the Real Presence showed me whats what. I always experience that same thing until my foolish mind interrupts with outside thoughts, usually 10 minutes into my visit. But if the beatific vision is anything like those 10 minutes I hope to run the race to the finish line.

It is very common for Charismatics to experience tongues during adoration of the blessed sacrament, but no, the Franciscan Friars are not a charismatic community.

This is where Fr. Benedict Groschel is from, and he is a very conservative orthodox Catholic. He is tolerant of charismatics, but does not show much interest in it himself.

My former parish allowed the Catholic Underground to come every once in a while. They would do it in the basement of the church. The parish advertised it to young adults and people in their 20s/30s as well. It’s not my cup of tea, especially music-wise as it doesn’t lend well to my spirituality, but I don’t think they played that music at an actual mass and if people do like it and are inspired by it, great.

I don’t remember ever hearing of people in that parish speaking in tongues, so I don’t think it would be a common occurrence at all events.

Speaking of Father Groeschel and the charismatics (not my cup of tea, either), he made this remark at a conference I attended in NYC in 2002:

‘Mary had a little lamb which never became a sheep. [It attended] a charismatic Mass and died for lack of sleep.’ Words in brackets are probably not the verbatim words. I would have to go back and listen to the tape I have of his talk to get the right ones.

Everyone in the audience cracked up when he said this, in his imitable ‘Noo Joisy’ [that’s ‘New Jersey’] accent.

Love that Father Groeschel! 😃 👍

Nice video!

I was asking someone about this recently. He said what he didn’t like is that there was never any quiet time in the adoration. There was constant singing or speaking by the friars. Is that true?
Well, that’s true to some extent. There’s not much of a quiet time apart from a few minutes of pause in between songs, but I personally never had an issue with that.

Is Father Stan Fortuna part of this? I love that guy. I am aware that he is part of that organization

I’ve not seen Fr Stan Fortuna at any of the Catholic Underground events I have been to (and I’ve been to quite a few). I have seen Fr. Benedict Groshel. And some months ago, we were graced with the presence of Archbishop Dolan himself at Catholic Underground!!
