For those of you who assist regularly at EF masses: Would you accept a consecrated host at an OF communion service?

My FSSP daily mass priest has been gone for a few days, and I’ve been doing some OF “parish hopping” to make sure to make mass every day. I’m not terribly against the OF mass - as a matter of fact, I went to an absolutely gorgeous mass at a Cistercian abbey on Friday - but I am a bit of a “traddie” in the fact that I always receive on the tongue, and I only receive the body of Christ from a priest. Period. It’s been that way since I converted five years ago.

I went to mass this evening at our diocean Cathedral. The mass was in Spanish, but truth be told, it’s very similar to going to a Latin mass, in the fact that I don’t understand a word that’s being said. 🙂 Christ is there, and that is the important part. But when they got the point of consecration in the mass, the altar boy went and got the ciborium out of the tabernacle, and the officient said a short prayer, and then started distributing the hosts. At the point when I realized there was no sacrifice, I guessed that this was a simple communion service, and that the person conducting the service was a deacon and not a priest. It’s been a while since I went to an OF parish on a regular basis, and didn’t realize it was a deacon by the vestments.

I made a pretty quick call to simply pray a spiritual communion and not receive a pre-blessed host. While there were some very pious people there, and most received on the tongue (and two kneeling!), I still felt awkward receiving. I knew it was canonically licit, but I also was still suffering disappointment that I didn’t get to assist at a true mass where I could fix an intention to God at the offering. For me, the act of the mass is not only the receiving of the body, blood, soul and divinity of my Savior, but a true sacrifice as well as prayers of adoration, contrition, thanksgiving and petition. Without the sacrifice and offering at the altar, the experience rang extremely hollow for me.

Also, on a side note, it broke my heart that I went to a diocean Cathedral that claims to have the second largest Sunday mass attendance after St. Patrick’s in New York, and yet they don’t have enough priests to do a daily Mass twice a day, or that they couldn’t get a sub in for one mass if there was a problem with the regular priest. I prayed to Mary for vocations, and for saintly priests who were loyal to the magisterium and who take their roles as guardians of souls with dire seriousness.

So if you’re a regular EF’er, what would you have done? Was I getting all Pharisee on everyone, with my action being tantamount to a prayer of “Thank you, Lord, that I am not like other Catholics”? Or did I miss out on an opportunity to receive a sacrament because I didn’t want to receive from someone who has not (both physically and spiritually) purified themselves before presenting me with the Body of Christ? Am I in need of a lesson in humility, or am I thinking too much about the situation?

I think you need a serious dose of humility.

This post proves to me what I have always suspected, that trads are in love with the EF liturgy more than they are in love with Christ in the Eucharist.

What do you mean by this? I don’t understand how an ordained member of the clergy is/is not “purified” when carrying out their ministry, nor do I understand how you know their spiritual state.

I have to be honest, I find a number of things in your post offensive. JPJD is right… humility. You may have other reasons - fine; but it seems to me you didn’t receive our Lord because he didn’t present himself according to your standards.

I am in love with Christ in the sacrifice at the altar. At the offering, I put on the paten and in the chalice all that I have to offer - my love, my will, my affections, my sorrows, everything that has meaning and worth in my life. I then offer myself, along with the sacrifice of the Mass, for a particular intention (usually the sanctity of priests). When I go to receive the Eucharist, I pray that as I have emptied myself, my soul for love of God, I ask in return that He fill me with his love as I receive him sacramentally. When I receive, I always say a prayer that I am receiving with the intention of atonement for all of the sin and coldness that He has been treated with in the altars all over the world.

It broke my heart that I had nothing to offer Him, no way to give myself to Him in the prayers of the mass. I pray so very hard during every mass I attend that my sacrifices to Him and my offering to Him is pleasing and will bring many souls to Him through the priests who he blesses with sanctity and the fire of love of God.

The priest washes his hands and says many prayers to purify himself before he begins the sacrifice of the mass. This is the English translation of what an EF priests says during mass:

The priest washes his fingers to symbolize the great purity and inner cleanliness of those who offer or participate in this great Sacrifice.
Psalm 25. 6-12
I will wash my hands among the innocent: and I will compass Thine altar, O Lord That I may hear the voice of praise: and tell of all Thy wonderous works. I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of Thy house and the place where Thy glory dwelleth. Take not away my soul, O God, with the wicked: nor my life with blood-thirsty men. In whose hands are iniquities, their right hand is filled with gifts. But I have walked in my innocence: redeem me, and have mercy on me. My foot hath stood in the direct way, in the churches I will bless Thee, O Lord.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

And I never, ever touch Him either. My hands are not pure, not ordained. This is GOD, my Savior, who shed His blood for me. I am not worthy to touch Him, and I would never risk dropping Him or disrespecting the blessed sacrament in any way. I have never received in the hand, and I was baptized in an OF parish, and went to one for years before transferring to my current FSSP parish.
