That’s not a wink that’s just my eye. :crutches:Anyway, I think what the commercial was saying is that infomation that finacial information, things I didn’t think were available on Facebook, were accessible; things like credit card numbers, bank balances, etc. I’m not on Facebook, so I don’t know, but can you buy things via Facebook? Even if you can’t it’s easy for me to see how the other information is gathered using your name, where you live, etc. A little searching, a little social engineering and way too much info is in the hands of the wrong person.
I really can’t think of too many people I know that are not on Facebook and quite a few say, “oh, I know I should check/change my settings but I don’t know how/haven’t taken the time.” I should sign up for Facebook, learn how to change sttings, then *hack into their accounts and change the settings for them.
- I’m kidding. I don’t know how to do this. And if I did I wouldn’t. But I would be tempted.

And yet people post things about their married life in the bedroom, on a public forum. And it’s one thing to post about oneself but is their spouse really okay with it? Do they really understand who gets to see that?

It’s not as if this is a new thing though…
Just a lot cheaper and quicker than it use to be. In the old days they’d use the details they were given on where to post “tickets”, or who is a potential client, or an attendance list, and then they’d hire Private Investigators to do the rounds… Find your phone number in the phone book, Check out where you live, go through your rubbish and find out what you like to eat, what bills you recently payed(and to whom), what car you own, what’s the registration of that car, who you’re related to which could include a visit to the birth, deaths and marriage’s office, or the local geneology research group… or they could just tap your landline OR mobile, which contrary to popular belief, is actually easier than physically tapping a landline.
They could use this information to fake a driver’s license, Passport, etc… train themeselves or someone who fits your general description to copy your signature and pass themselves off as you, access your bank account details and other financial records(without taking anything out, so you don’t suspect something’s happened… unless a robbery WAS what they wanted to do).
That was in the old days… but the techniques are still pretty much the same, just adapted for “online technology”, and the PI’s are mostly hackers now. Although if they really want to get a full rundown on a person, PI’s tailing them to find out their regular schedule(or do the more manual stuff like Phone taps) are still a nessecity.
Facebook brings it’s own complications, as they can themselves be traced using their IP(and even hiding your IP, by using a proxy server, doesn’t work all the time… Sometimes, but not all the time) if incidents are correctly reported.
I’ve always had a lay interest in computer security, and general security too, as has my father… we’re both huge fans of the Gene Hackman absolute classic “The Conversation” by Francis Ford Coppella.
You want to be truly warned and scared about this stuff, you should watch that film and imagine if that’s what they could do in the 70s, what can they get up to right now with all this newer technology?
