So many errors. Painting Christians as un-enlightened simpletons or villains. It’s boring to keep correcting, but here are a few facts, to set the record straight. Just a few great statesmen and scientists, intellectuals who were devout Christians, off the top of my head:
-Emperor Constantine the Great, legalized Christianity in the Roman empire in the 4th century
-St. Benedict, established monastic life. After Europe was overrrun by pagan migrant peoples, monasteries saved civilization from total destruction. At the height of the middle ages, there were 30,000 monasteries in Europe (more than McDonalds today in the USA). Monks were experts in agriculture, industry, the medical sciences, and literacy, among others. They were the greatest innovators in such areas as the industry and agriculture, they were teachers, and took care of poor and sick people.
-St. Stephen, official canonized saint in the Catholic Church, established the kingdom of Hungary in 896 A.D.
-St. Vladimir, canonized saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, established the kingdom of Russia in the 990s.
-several great kings and statesmen of the middle ages, incl. Charlemagne, St. Louis the king of France, etc.
-Dr Martin Luther King Jr, civil rights hero
-Lech Walesa, founder of Solidarity movement and President of Poland, hero of the anti-Communist fight
-President Ronald Reagan, another hero who defeated Communism
-President George W. Bush, liberated some 60 million people from the dictator Saddam Hussein in Iraq and murderous Taliban in Afghanistan; made a major and highly successful effort to fight infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS and malaria in Africa
-Nicolaus Copernicus, Catholic priest, heliocentric theory
-Johannes Kepler, formulated the laws governing the movement of planets, comets
-Galileo Galilei, Catholic, used by contemporary Catholic- and Pope-bashers. They only forget that he was nevertheless religious. Somewhat amusingly, he based his heliocentric theory on the wrong premises. Ignored Kepler’s law and his argument for the motion of earth, based on tides, was refuted. The Catholic Church forbade him to present his theory as a proven fact, he was not forbidden to present it as a hypothesis.
-Leonardo da Vinci, polyhistor
-Isaac Newton, established laws of classical mechanics, gravitation, mathematical methods of integral and differential calculus
-Rene Descartes, Catholic, mathematician, philosopher
-Blaise Pascal, physics (hydrodinamics), mathematics
-Andre Marie Ampere, physicist (electricity)
-Alessandro Volta, physicist and biologist
-Carl Linnaeus, the greatest botanist of all times, established taxonomy of plants
-Gregor Mendel, Catholic monk and Abbot of his monastery, who discovered the first laws of genetics and heredity (laws of segregation)
-Mendeleev, periodic table of elements
-Louis Pasteur, devout Catholic, microbiologist, developed first vaccine against rabies
-Maxwell, Faraday, Heinrich Hertz - the big trio who invented and experimentally proved electromagnetic theory and electromagnetic waves
-Robert Boyle, James Joule, Lord Kelvin - physicists (theory of gases, thermodynamics)
-Max Planck, physicist, founder of quantum theory
-Werner Heisenberg - physicist, theory of indeterminism
-Buzz Aldrin - one of the first three astronauts to land on the Moon, with Apollo 11, an Anglican who took the species of Christian Communion (bread and wine as instituted by Jesus Christ) to the Moon, and his first act on the Moon was to give thanks to God and take this Christian Communion.
A few words about the Popes:
-in the 15th century, during the colonization of Canary Islands, the Pope excommunicated those who would enslave the indigenous population
-in the 16th century, during the colonization of South America, the Pope excommunicated those who would enslave the Native American (Indian) population
-in the 19th-20th c., Pope Leo 13 and others repeatedly denounced Communism as incompatible with Catholicism
-before WW2, Pope Pius 12 denounced Nazism in an encyclical. During WW2, he took the path of behind-the-scenes actions to save Jews. He lifted the enclosure of monasteries and convents, allowing the monks and nuns to hide Jewish people in their religious buildings. Also allowed Catholic clergy to issue fake birth certificates for Jewish people, pretending they were Catholics. After WW2, the Chief Rabbi of Rome gave thanks to Pius 12 in a public radio address. Pope Pius 12 was pronounced “venerable” (first step to canonization) Dec 19, 2009.
-Pope Paul 6 - published the encyclical Humanae Vitae in 1968, instantaneously becoming Public Enemy No. 1 to the “enlightened” secularists and humanists. What did he do to earn their hate? He denounced artificial birth control, as something that will lead to sexual promiscuity, divorce, abortion, and euthanasia. He was exactly right! A great defender of human life and the sanctity of marriage! The premier civil rights issue of our times is the sanctity of life, especially pre-born babies and old/sick people, and Pope Paul 6 spoke out eloquenty on these issues.
-Pope John Paul 2, a modern polyhistor, fluent in 8 languages, a great mind in theology and the ethics of human life, marriage, sexuality. Defender of the sanctity of human life and marriage. Coined the term “culture of death”. Again, THIS is the real civil rights issue of our times: the DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE, ESPECIALLY IN ITS MOST DEFENSELESS FORMS. THE FIGHT AGAINST ABORTION, EMBRYO DESTRUCTION FOR STEM CELLS, EUTHANASIA. Played a very big role in defeating Communism in Eastern Europe. Poet and playwright. Avid sportsman - kayaking trips, skier, mountain climber.
-Pope Benedict 16 (our present Pope) - an accomplished theologian, university professor and dean at Regensburg and Munchen, one of the finest intellectuals on the planet.
Who tried to belittle Christians and their accomplishments?
