Dad when I was 9, mom when I was 14.

This has got to be among the most insulting and messed up posts I’ve ever read on this forum
I’ve been to see a headshrink probably two score times or more, and other professionals of the head (being an epileptic) on a monthly basis. I don’t see the big deal.

< begins to wave pocket-watch >
I have a close relationship to death,
I know the feeling, but I wouldn’t put it in such a macabre way. I’ve seen more violence, death and related miscellany in 15 years (not counting the death of my mother, for which I was not present) than I think or at least hope, if the Lord wills it, than most people in the Free World will have to see in a lifetime.

Losing a parent can be very hard… no matter what your relationship was with them you will still miss them. If the relationship was troubled, you will still spend time trying to sort it out and praying for them. (I still do and it’s been many years) And when both parents are gone, you become the “oldest” generation and really are an orphan now.

Of course, no one knows exactly what it’s like for you in particular, but having a loving spouse does help. I feel sad for people who can’t get support from their spouses. That’s one of the key points in one’s life that you always expect a spouse to help you with–just like the birth of your children.

There’s nothing like going to the funeral of your parent and having a spouse hold your hand and let you cry. If you’re not married, then a sibling or other relative can also be a big help, or a very close friend. Failing all that, Mary knows deep grief and she could be a comfort too.

Oh, and sometimes a complete stranger can help you through in unbelievable ways (it happened to me).

My condolences to the OP on his/her loss.

My dad passed away 6 months after I was married… so almost 14 years ago.

My dad was a great guy, caring, funny, doting, hard working.

I miss him incredibly…he would have been a wonderful grandfather.

Eternal rest grant unto those who have passed on, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

For the intentions of the families and friends who have lost a parent I pray:

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kindgom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliever us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

May the most just, the most loveable, and the most high Will of God be done, be praised, be fulfilled in all things. Amen.

…Now that my dad is gone, I feel a sense of ‘aloneness’ At first I felt like half and orphan and it was an odd feeling. But… whenever life gets hard (which is a lot lately but that is another post), I feel more abandonned by God and closer to my biological father. I wish I could have more faith in God

…
Yet, there is still some kind of naggin aloneness that I can’t shake. There is the fear of realy having to be an adult now. It is really easy to be an adult when there are parents to fall back on, but now that it is absolutely out of the question, there is a fear. I wonder if married people feel that way or if they are just so use to relying on their spouse, this does not cross their minds

So… I guess I just needed to ramble

CM
I have lost both my parents and my husband has lost his father. I think married people can feel the way you described, especially when they are going through a difficult period. Even though we rely on our spouses, we are also a mommy and daddy, (in most cases) and there are little people relying on us to be the grown ups. I miss my mom and dad–and I wish my children had their grandparents.

My condolences on the loss of your father, and may he lead you closer to your Heavenly Father. The loss of one’s dad gives a different meaning to the words, “Our father who art in heaven.” I pray both our fathers and my husband’s father are in heaven. Eternal rest grant unto them Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

We are so quick in today’s world to put marriage down and also to shove people into therapy over everything. It makes me wonder how our ancestors dealt with familial loss before the advent of the “culture of therapy”?

Back then, there were cerimonial requirements dedicated to helping people deal with such issues. Today, we’ve stripped people of their dignity and right to such practices. Have you ever read about the Jewish practices after someone dies? it’s very heartwarming. We’ve replaced it with therapy, nothing to discard by the way. It has value that had it not been extended to me i probabaly wouldn’t be sitting her righ tnow typing on the clumbsy notebook computer in my power outage… thus the typos.

It wasn’t as far back as we think. I think of my parents and grandparents generation, and my Catholic immigrant grandmother who lost two young children (including a daughter that was killed in a fire while she was giving birth to another daughter).

Maybe what has been lost is familial support. I would really like to see a graph detailing the rise of the “culture of therapy” and superimpose it over one detailing the breakdown of traditional family. I would not be surprised to see a correlation.

With all due respect Anathama, copying and pasting the same prayers are not really helpful to me. I love that people pray for me, but on this forum I am hoping for other’s perspectives. Please join the conversation if you wish but please don’t keep posting the same thing
