Only if you confess ALL your mortal sins, including the adultery or murder AND you have a firm intention not to continue in that/those sin(s).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 1415 states that “anyone who desires to receive Christ in Eucharistic communion must be in a state of grace. Anyone aware of having sinned mortally must not receive communion without having received absolution in the sacrament of penance.”

Also paragraph 1463

“Certain particularly grave sins incur excommunication, the most severe ecclesiastical penalty, which impedes the reception of the sacraments and the exercise of certain ecclesiastical acts,and for which absolution consequently cannot be granted, according to cannon law, except by the Pope, the bishop of the place or priests authorized by them. In danger of death any priest, even if deprived of faculties for hearing confessions, can absolve from any sin and excommunication”

Having read this i would say that the person is simply living in a state of mortal sin and if he were to die today he would most likely go to the unhappy place. I don’t think he is excommunicated from the church, but rather that he must ask his priest to take his case to the bishop, he should honestly confess his sin to the bishop, make a firm resolution to not commit this sin again. Just my opinion, but there is no thing and no person on earth that I would be willing to trade Jesus Christ and heaven for.

I suggest that this person go to daily mass if possible and pray daily rosaries begging for strength and guidance from our Lord Jesus Christ to strengthen his resolve to do the right thing. May God bless you.

You are generally getting “bad answers” because you did not tell us up-front that you are Orthodox - the place to do that is in the Religion section of your user profile, so it shows up on the header of every post you make. Since you posted in a Latin Catholic forum, and not the Non-Catholic Religions forum, we naturally assumed that you are a Latin Church Catholic, and we crafted our answers accordingly. If you want an answer for/from Orthodox, then post in Non-Catholic Religions. The Eastern Catholicism forum users can also possibly help you with such a disciplinary question.

Francis, allegra and Constantine gave good replies. I guess I should mention I’m orthodox. in my sometimes a person is forbidden to take Communion as kind of penance. But iT looks like Constantine and Françis disagree.

Does excommunication mean no Communion or no sacraments at all?

Why as an Orthodox you are asking this question in a Catholic forum? Why not ask your priest?
