Well, I guess my question is, why do devout (even if lunatic fringe) Muslims do this sort of thing? Has anything comparable been done by Christians?

Having said that… Yes it horrifies me to know that people are tarnishing the name of Islam this way. In the Qur’an, Allah says:

002.256
YUSUFALI: Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
