So what is this Moby Dick reference? I don’t understand. I thought I’d been keeping up on this thread…but I clearly have missed a big theme!

(NB: I know what Moby Dick is --:p–I just want to know why it’s being referenced here.)
Coptic has not been able to reference anything, because we are still waiting for CU to answer the question “have you read…”

Seems to me his question is a lot simplier than mine…

Ah, I see, then. 🙂

I’ve read Moby Disk, but my version seems to have some chapters that have gone missing. 😛

Christian Unity…

The Catholic Church has the full deposit of faith in Christ Jesus. Those who have separated have Christ, but in limited form.

Do the different ecclesial denominations have catechisms that cover the scope of their faith and practice? Do you have worship that goes beyond Bible studies? Do you have documented 2,000 years of history of the saints? Do you have studies on ascetism, the way of perfection? Do you have souls consecrated in truth and spirit who give their lives totally to the Lord for His kingdom?

Do your denominations always have to take on the Catholic Church to validate themselves? As I told you before, we never hear any reference to Protestants as we have no ‘holes’ in our faith to hash out. But we do have ongoing challenges presented to us in contemporary culture on ethical and moral issues, and the Church likewise has consistently taught our understanding and response to these issues.

I do not see great scholarly research and response to faith in all the humanitarian care of living out the Gospel for one’s neighbor as does the Catholic Church. We have the longest recorded and documented history of our beliefs and practices, the devotions, the work of Mary in the Church along with the angels and the saints.

Protestants have part of the truth of Jesus and live in His Spirit and witness for His Word, but they are missing out on the full deposit of faith … and practice, and having that knowledge that Jesus is present ministering to us through the sacraments.

I think when people break away because of one or two quotes of Scripture with the idea that they are reforming Christianity are indeed in a pickle.

It is even more of a pickle when they come back to us to tell us we got it all wrong.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. - Apostle Paul
In another thread, you stated that you “personally believe in sola scriptura over apostolic succession.” So why doesn’t Paul say “the greatest of these is faith”? After all, if salvation is the ultimate goal, and the only way to reach salvation is through faith alone, why isn’t faith greater than love?

Thanks Mr Herman Melville for that great adventure, if you haven’t read it go here, you will love it and this site(Sparknotes, Moby Dick.)
Peace, to us all , Carlan

Protestants like to stay within the Scriptures when discussing whale stories. What does Moby Dick have to do with the thread topic?

Stay within the Scriptures my friends when discussing whale tales…

I have always wondered this too. Or why does it not say “to the glory of God alone” is the greatest? This is one of the points of Calvanism that I find so baffling. For Calvin, God glorifying Himself has more value than His love for us, by which He gave up His only Son to purchase us for Himself.

You seem to have a habit of speaking for thow whole of Protestantism, yet you have acknowledged that there are many different perspectives of Protestantism many of which do not agree with you .

Not all Protestants are opposed to reading classics, or the Early Fathers.

Had you considered that, if you were to provide an answer to the question, we could all find out? what are you afraid of?

Why are you afraid to talk about Cornelius?

Perhaps you don’t know or have forgotten how much can be found about human transformation in Moby Dick?

Do you know anything about the faith of the author?
