LOL, I’m not Protestand. Maybe you don’t understand what Catholic means.

“Less legitimate”… Goodness, love and acceptance all around! No passing judgement here? Better duck those stones!

I wasn’t arguing any particular faith, I was making a point.
So, which church do you go to?

Right. Get the logs ready. Burn me at the stake.

Another “Christian” comment? “Christian” ridicule?

By the way, DeFide, you might want to change your entire being. If a stranger asked you where a Christian/Catholic was, you wouldn’t dare point to yourself. Don’t you think?
Eden’s right. You missed the entire thrust of my comment. If you are Lutheran, say so! Who are you trying to fool?

Eden:
Where did DeFide say “Christian”? He is referring to the fact that you call yourself a “Reformed Catholic” yet you would not point to your church (Lutheran?) if asked where the Catholic Church was.
No, I was suggesting that his/her comments and behavior were un-Christian, and that he was not representing him/herself well.

I think what you’ve got to understand, and this is the reality of it, that the Latin Rite Catholic Church does not hold the “trademark” on the word “Catholic.”

No, if someone asked me where the Roman Catholic church was, I certainly wouldn’t point them to the church I’m currently affiliated with.

…and…if they asked you where the Catholic Church meets… you’d say… well?

I don’t see how it is un-Christian to question why a non-Catholic would call themselves Reformed Catholic. Some Lutherans call themselves that because they don’t like the stigma of being Protestants.

Nah, I got the thrust of your comment and I found it offensive given the tone and the fact that you assert that I perpetuate a fraud. I’m not Lutheran and I’m not trying to fool anyone. What would be the point of that? Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever met a Lutheran.

It’s not un-Christian to question- it is to ridicule, to judge, and demean.

I am a Catholic. I’m not a Protestant. I don’t know how much clearer I can make it. I don’t do sign language.

Utrects are in protest to Rome sinse V1. I.E. in protest = protestant.

They claim “adherance to the ancient catholic faith” yet very little they believe is from the ancient church, as history bears out.

You’re fooling yourself.

Universal means we all have the same belief. Clearly you don’t, no matter how much you have tried to change the intent of the meaning of “Universal church”.

Perhaps if you define something solely on what it is “against” rather than what it is “for.”

Even the Pope recognizes the validity of the Apostolic Succession of the Old Catholic Church, not that it really matters to them.

You witnessed 2,000 years of history? You know their beliefs? Did Christ give you a copy of His strategic plan too?

I’m Catholic.

LOL, who’s changing the meaning of words?? So now “universal” means “limited” or “conformist?”

I would venture to say you need to do some study of the Early Church Fathers along with some history. The above is linked, so you don’t think it is Rome’s propoganda, to the same documents on a protestant site. Ignore the commentary, whether you read them from the protestant side or the catholic side about the writings and place them in context to what they are set against in history.

The church recognizes only some of the “Old Catholics”, not all of them. You have breakaways from breakaways, that are invalid. Not that it matters to them. If you want to know the early christian beliefs and read history then yes, I do know their beliefs. Ignorance is not a good thing. Yes Christ did leave a strategic plan, it’s called the church. He promised to protect it til the end of time, He initiated sacraments and the clergy to administer. Good plan in my opinion. The apostles bear out the plan.

Does the “Universal church” consist of Mormons, JW’s, Budhists, Hindus, Islam etc, protestants who believe in reincarnation (yes there is one down the street from me and claims to be christian)? Or are you going to place some limits now on the meaning?

If you are, who gave you the authority to do so? They may disagree.

I would start with the 7 letters of Ignatius (disciple of John the apostle), 1 Clement, Barnabas, Polycarp, Iranaeus, Justin Matyr and the Shepherd of Hermas. Then move onto Cyprian, Origen, Jerome, Anthanasius, Augustine and Cyril. There are lots more though.

The early church councils will be beneficial as well. If you wish to persue what the gnostics and heretics believed, to set the stage of the writings, I can provide links to their writings and beliefs as well.

Peace and God Bless

I didn’t realize Rome engaged in propaganda. Thanks for the heads-up.

Whether or not the See of Rome recognizes them, if they have a valid Apostolic Succession, an established episcopate, and celebrate the Sacraments then they are Catholic, regardless of their teachings, doctrine, dogma, etc.

You know the mind of Christ and His intentions? Impressive.

For all I know the “universal church” may well include the other faiths you mentioned, but like you said, I’m not in a position to JUDGE, or put limits on meanings or redefine them. You seem to think you are.

Gnostics, heretics- it’s so much easier to disregard ideas you disagree with by labeling those who have them and then assigning them a negative connotation so that it leads to prejudice.

Thanks for the reading suggestions.

If you have no interest in the truth (which is contrary to the Christian belief) I guess there isn’t much more to say. Ignorance isn’t bliss.

May God bless you on your journey if you decide to take it. You have my blessing.

Boy, you have some gall. At this point the visitors would give you an odd look and find another person who isn’t interested in playing little ego games.

:whacky: :ehh: You are starting to sound like the arguing Apostles about who was the greatest. Peter was appointed as the Rock, you know…

Cyprian of Carthage explanation on who is Catholic is as relevant today as it was in his time.
“The Lord says to Peter: ‘I say to you,’ he says, ‘that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.’ . . . On him [Peter] he builds the Church, and to him he gives the command to feed the sheep [John 21:17], and although he assigns a like power to all the apostles, yet he founded a single chair cathedra], and he established by his own authority a source and an intrinsic reason for that unity. Indeed, the others were that also which Peter was but a primacy is given to Peter, whereby it is made clear that there is but one Church and one chair. So too, all are shepherds, and the flock is shown to be one, fed by all the apostles in single-minded accord. If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he [should] desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?” (*The Unity of the Catholic Church *4; 1st edition [A.D. 251]).

Liberian:
Dimmers,

There are many churches that call themselves Catholic, but there is only one Catholic Church. Inside the Catholic Church are several “rites” or sub-organizations, if you will, but they are all in full communion with the Pope. These include the Latin Rite (commonly called “Roman Catholic”), the Syro-Malabar Rite, the Ukrainian Rite, the Byzantine Rite, and others.
  • Liberian
So the Byzantine Rite is in union with the Holy See in Rome?
I ask because I was listening to some Byzantine religious music and it is some really beautiful stuff. I was just wondering why they called themselves Byzantine Catholic and if they were in union with Rome.

Thank you all for your replies.

**IGNORE! I got the answer from reading the links provided by someone above. I am satisfied with everything now. My questions have been answered and I learned a thing or two in this day. Thank you all and God Bless you. **
