Forgive my ignorance

So I guess it is important when I tell someone I am Catholic to say “Roman Catholic” right? Forgive my ignorance as well please.

I would just say you are Catholic. If you want to elaborate, you can say “Latin Rite”.
 
yep, that is good too. I just never thought the Catholic church was as diverse as it is. I am a recent convert , (2 years) and never thought of it. But I must say my conversion was the best thing that happened to me.
 
I always thought there was one Catholic church and had no idea there was different RITES and different practicing Catholics in general.

This explains why when I lived in Queens, New York (Astoria) I would see these really tall nuns wearing all black (kinda scary looking) with these really large Crucifix around their wastes. Also I would see similiarly dressed Priests that resembled Hassidic Jews picking up children at the local schools. From what I have read these would be Greek Orthodox Catholics. Very interesting stuff.

SO…in regard to the Catholic Church…yes, the word catholic does mean “universal”. The Catholic Church (in line with Rome) follows apostolic succession from Peter to Benedict XVI. I believe someone somewhere in this thread mentioned something about there only being one truth. This is very applicable here, either the Pope is the Vicar of Christ, successor to Peter, or he is not. In schismatic churches, the Pope is not the head, and there for not in union with the Catholic Church established and maintained under the apostolic succession of the Pope. Hope this is clear (I think I’ve garbled it a bit :))

And by the way, thanks for the links beckyann, I’ve been discussing this topic with some of my friends and we were looking for this material :).

there is One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ and it continues its existance on earth as the Catholic Church, whose head is Jesus Christ and his representative on earth is the Pope. There are within the Church several rites, I believe 21 or so, that is, bodies, usually geographic in origin, with their own liturgy and discipline. This topic has been canvassed dozens of times. Please do a search. also you will find the forums much more useful and enjoyable if you first do your homework on the CA homepage on common topics like this one.

Heh! Well after being kind of scolded for asking, it makes it hard to want to ask anything else. I believe Jesus himself said we are like children, that he knows our ignorance. Children tend to ask many questions. Do we tell them SEARCH AND READ ENCYCLOPEDIAS or do we try and answer them. I would understand if I asked “WHY DO WE BELIEVE IN MARY?” That I know has been covered about a billion times. I guess I could have overreacted and read into it too much.

One hard thing about text communication is that it’s darn near impossible to sense tone of voice. A mere suggestion sometimes comes across as something far more severe, despite intentions.

Agreed, that answer is inadequate. It’s a form of Sola Scriptura, but mainly because:

Romans 10:14: But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? 15: And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!” 16: But they have not all obeyed the gospel; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17: So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ.

Please continue to ask questions, you will hear from people. In the case of the internet hearing in written medium, but still hearing in a sense.

I wouldn’t worry about it. And I’d continue asking questions. I’m not so sure the one post was directed at you as there other posters here who were not clear on this and stated this was new knowledge for them.

Still passing judgement. Still ridiculing. A true testament to “real” catholics?

I would ask them “which catholic church are you looking for?”

If they said “the Reformed Catholic Church,” then I’d point them to it. If they said “St. Suchandsuch” making reference to one of the Roman churches in the parish, I’d point them to it or to someone who knows where it is.

I wonder if there’s a rash of religio-centrism or religious narcissism in some of todays catholics.

I have never said that the Latin Rite (and other Rites) Church is not the one founded by Christ. I have just presented the personal theory that the Church has grown not only in size, but structure, as a tree with the various Rites and Jurisdictions as branches of that tree. I believe that over the years, many of the schizms have resulted in new “branches” of the One Church, the whole tree.

PUH-LEASE. If they belonged to some schismatic church that just happened to have the name “catholic” somewhere in it, they’d be sure to be very specific about up front it to avoid being sent to a Catholic church.
