So just a quick question for the evening. I’m trying to make confession a regular part of my life, but something is still confusing me. Let’s say I forget to confess one of my sins, but I fully intended to confess all my sins. Do I need go back to confession to be freed of the sin, or am I forgiven regardless if I forgot? Thank you for your time!

When you go in to the confessional, confess all of the sins that you can remember. And when you are done, you should say, like I do, “and for all of the sins I can’t remember.” Or there’s also another way to say it, you can look it up. But basically, the sins that you forgot to mention are forgiven. However, try to make a good examination of conscience before entering the confessional. Just make sure you do not intentionally omit sins, because if you intentionally do not confess a mortal sin in the confessional, then that is a mortal sin in itself. But if you truly just forgot to mention something and later remembered it, you’re forgiven.

Also, if you happen to forget to mention a mortal sin (though like I said, try to make a good examination beforehand) and you remember it later, you are forgiven, but it is a good rule of thumb to mention it in your next confession.

I say something similar - “For these and all my sins I am truly sorry…”

No you’re completely forgiven. Especially if it’s a venial sin in which case you have no duty to confess it.

However, the church asks us to confess all of our mortal sins. So even though you are already forgiven you should confess any mortal sins you forgot at your next confession. Make sure the priest understands the situation. After listing my sins I’ll usually just say “and at my last confession I forgot to confess that…”
