After careful consideration and I have pretty much come to the conclusion that forgiveness is conditional. This is backed up by study of scripture and an artical that Jimmy Aiken has written for C/A.

My next Question is love conditional? Does God love us conditionally? Do we love our family and neigbors conditionally? If so what are the conditions?

there is one condition to experiancing the unconditional love of God- we must accept it. otherwise it is like if there was someone giving a hug and the other did not recipracate it. just as it takes it takes two to hug, the unconditional love of God demands our assent to it, or “fiat”.
there are conditions also to our uncondtional love of neighbor (although it seems contradictory). the conditions are place on the “lover”: continue to love despite fault, be patient with others, be faithful to the relationship, you must desire what is good for the other, and that sort of thing.
once you cease to love unconditionally, it ceases to be unconditional love, and therefore the only condition to unconditional love is to love unconditionally.
PS. as to love of others, remember the saying, “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me” you can love others unconditionally, but it should not be blind to thier faults, rather it should embrace thier faults wit hthe view to assist in thier salvation.
 
God’s love is not conditional. He loves us no matter what. Our love for others is conditional, although we are supposed to strive to love like God. We are only human, and human love is conditional.

With forgiveness, I’ve never read the article you mentioned, but God’s forgiveness is unconditional as well. Maybe I’m way off base on this one, but I’ve always believed and been taught that God forgives you no matter what sin you’ve committed. Confession is necessary for absolution of the sin, but God promises to forgive all sins. I’ve talked with several priests as well who told me God forgives everything even before we go to the confessional, but confession is necessary to heal the relationship w/ others and Him…and provides absolution. Human forgiveness, on the other hand, is conditional…although again, we are supposed to forgive others unconditionally, like God.

God’s love for us is unconditional. The proof of this, is that He first created us and called His creation “good”. When we fell from grace… He then sent His very own Son… to die for our salvation. Then, His Son… echoed that love and gave us His Mother… to be our mother. And… as if all of this wasn’t enough… He then sent His Holy Spirit to fill us with grace.

It is true, however… that man can choose to reject God’s love. God has given each of us free will. And sadly, those who do evil (live in sin, unrepentent) reject the love of God. Pray for poor sinners… that all may be converted. Because Gods Love… being unconditional… will always forgive, and welcome us back in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. :gopray:

Both Love and Forgiveness are unconditional.

I know that I’m reviving an older thread, but I was about to start one on the same topic. Before doing so I ran a search using the phrase “unconditional love” & found this one.

I heard Pope Benedict use the phrase, God’s “unconditional love” while he was in this country, but I don’t think that the Church has ever defined the phrase. I have been told, by Catholics, that God loves those in Hell & I disagree.

God’s love is truly amazing… God’s love is unilateral: He loves the unlovable and gives His glory to them. God’s love is completely undeserved. God’s love is unfailing for those in whom He delights: who respond to Him and receive His Son. But, God’s love is, IMO., clearly not “unconditional”; for wrath and eternal damnation will come to those who reject His Messiah and His Gospel. The idea that we can count upon God’s Love, when we reject it, abuse it, neglect it, etc…leads many to picture God as a sweet, old man who tolerates any kind of evil & brushes it off saying “Don’t worry about it, I know that you’ve had a hard life”.

I think that God stands ready to love, forgive & help anyone living who is gravely sorry about the serious wrong he/she has done. However, if one does not even feel sorrow for one’s sins, IMO. God’s Love turns into God’s wrath after death.

I love to hear more opinions about this.
