I understand that attending the mass removes venial sins. Is that also true of a communion service? Is it the mass or receiving the eucharist that removes sin?

Thank you.

Lately I have been hearing a lot from people over the country of these comunion services. Are there that many??? That is a terrible shame. Where I live there are about one Catholic Church per square mile and about 3 priests to every parish. 🙂 Thanks God!!

Blessing yourself with holy water as you enter the church removes venial sins. The penetential rite (I confess to Almighty God…, Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy) also removes venial sins. Lastly the reception of communion removes venial sins as well as strengthens our soul against future mortal sins. If you were receiving communion at the communion service it would remove venial sins.

The answer to your question is:

YES,YES, and YES

The Penetential Rite which is found at the beginning of Mass and a Communion service forgives venial sins.

The act of Receiving Holy Communion also forgives venial sins.

Being present and participating in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass even if you do not receive Holy Communion forgives venial sins.

None of the above forgives Mortal sins when Sacramental Reconcilaition/Confession is easily available.

YES! even simple prayer of repentance can absolve you from venial sins. As long as you are truly repenting.

Sorry to say this but let’s not be so negative about the communion service. I think we must understand that sometimes priest are lacking in some parishes. This service occurs around the world where there are lack of priests. I think thereis nothing wrong with the extraordinary ministers giving the Consecrated Host in the Service as long as they don’t try to consecrate the hosts themselves.
