Earlier today i was in a conversation with a couple if my friends (one Muslim, one Atheist) about the forgiveness of sins. I promptly stated that God forgives sins as long as we accept Christ and confess/do penance for our sins. My Atheist friend then said the following “But is it forgiveness if you are requiring penance? Isn’t it unusual to say we forgive someone, but then still require they be punished?”

I honestly did not know how to respond to this satisfactorily so i left the comment and went on with the conversation, but know i really want to know how to answer him if it ever comes up again.

Is penance the same as punishment?

When ever I have been given penance I never felt I was being punished.

I thought this to, but he seems to think that it is a punishment for doing something wrong.

It’s my understanding of penance being more of REPARATION…not punishment…

And reparation and punishment are different…tell your friend they are confusing the two…

May I ask what is it preparing you for?

When I was Catholic the Priest would say, "for your punishment for your sins say 10 Hail Mary’s, 10 Our Fathers.

The Priest never said for “your punishment,” he may have said for your Penance say this or that but never “YOUR PUNISHMENT”

St. Paul explained, “Now I rejoice in my suffering for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His body, that is, the Church…” [3]

What in heaven’s sake is St. Paul saying?

St. Alphonsus [4] summarizes this statement as follows:

“Can it be that Christ’s passion alone was insufficient to save us? No. It left nothing more to be done; it was more than sufficient to save all men. However, for the merits of the Passion to be applied to us, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, [5] we need to cooperate (subjective redemption) by patiently bearing the trials God sends us, so as to become like our head, Christ.”

This is called ‘reparation.’ It is a theological doctrine of the Catholic Church. Reparation is the foundation of many confraternities and pious associations [6] – to make reparation for our sins and for the sins of mankind.

That infinite merit of Christ’s Passion and Sacrifice on Calvary enables us to add our daily prayers, labors, trials, and sufferings to those of our Lord. Thus, we become actually co-redeemers with Christ, sharing in His suffering.

Suffering, more than anything else, makes present in the history of humanity the force of the Redemption. [7]

Why should we make reparation to God? For two reasons: 1) to repair for our own offences against Him, 2) by virtue of the Communion of the Saints, we can also make satisfaction or reparation for the sins of others.

However, we first need to see ourselves as we really are so we can properly intercede for the souls of others. We do this through frequent Confession. [8]

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, n.2412, n.2487, n.2454, n. 2509 teaches that every offense committed entails the duty of reparation, even if its author has been forgiven.

The greatest offering of reparation is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The Council of Trent (1551) declares:

As a means of regaining grace and justice, penance was at all times necessary for those who had defiled their souls with any mortal sin. . . . Before the coming of Christ, penance was not a sacrament, nor is it since His coming a sacrament for those who are not baptized.** But the Lord then principally instituted the Sacrament of Penance, when, being raised from the dead, he breathed upon His disciples saying: ‘Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained’ (John 20:22-23). **By which action so signal and words so clear the consent of all the Fathers has ever understood that the power of forgiving and retaining sins was communicated to the Apostles and to their lawful successors, for the reconciling of the faithful who have fallen after Baptism. (Sess. XIV, c. i)

The Cathloic Church has never, never, never, said punishment this is some thing you must have got from a non-denomination church
Bill you were not there all those years. Were you there in the confessional with me, I don’t think so. So don’t tell me what I heard when I was a Catholic. And stop blaiming everything on a non-denomination church. Its getting pretty old.

I think Rev. Kevin could of very well had a priest that said “punishment” instead of “penance” even though it is not Church teaching so arguing against it is kinda a moot point.

Look I’m not making a big deal out of it. I really could careless what they say. I know what I heard you don’t. But then I can’t be right because I’m not Catholic.

If your priest said that, then he misspoke, because its “penance”, not “punishment”. I think one of the reasons people here are focusing on this is because there is a difference between punishment and penance, and no one wants to confuse the two. So either your priest was confused on this, or perhaps you didn’t hear him correctly and you heard “punishment” when the priest really said “penance”. Catholics are sensitive to misinformation of our sacraments and theology and obviously don’t want the wonderful sacrament of penance to be misconstrued. I am not saying you are intentionally doing this, but we do have to correct any misunderstandings.
