Forgiveness of Sins

Is a person’s sins forgiven if he does not intend to refrain from committing the same sin in the future? The person could be insincere when praying the Act of Contrition, yet the priest could not realize it and give absolution.

Additionally, is sin forgiven if the person does not do the penance assigned? Absolution is given by the priest before penance is done.

Lets say a person committed a mortal sin of murder and did not repent but just confessed it but intended to go out the next day to do it again. Is he absolved/forgiven? No.

Venial sin can be somewhat different …one can intend to do better with a say a venially sinful habit etc (we will struggle with at least some venial sins all our life…“daily sins”)

As to penance if the person receives the penance intending to do it --but forgets --that does not make the absolution invalid.

Now if the Priest say gives him a chapter to read in the Gospel but in confession the penitent intends to not do it…that is a different story…

Essentially, if the person intends to sin again, then the person is not actually repentant, and therefore cannot be forgiven. And if they went to confession, they would also be lying to the priest, because they are saying they want forgiveness, but because they are unrepentant, they are not actually doing so, which invalidates the confession. And as was said before, if the priest gives penance, but the person does not intend to do said penance, this is an indication that they are not truly repentant and again, invalidates the confession.

Venial sin is different than mortal sin. One can say has a habit of say eating too much …and they resolve to work on it…to be better.

Such is different then regarding mortal sin.
