I got into a heated discussion about forgiving others. The person I argued with quoted Luke 17:3, and said we are not obligated to forgive someone who hasn’t repented to us.

Luk 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

I replied that the text doesn’t say not to forgive someone who hasn’t repented, but says to forgive those who have.

any thoughts?

As Christians we are to be imitators of Christ.

“Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ”. (1 Cor 11:1)

And did Jesus not say on the cross

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

These people, whom Jesus forgive, **did not repent **before him, yet he forgave them. We must do the same.

What good does one gain by not forgiving?

A case can be made for not forgetting…but not forgiving is a bit more difficult to justify.

What about the lord’s prayer?

“forgive us our trespasses as WE FORGIVE those who trespass against us”

Pray that every day, pray for a forgiving heart, and God will show you how to forgive.

Besides, one does more harm to themselves by not being forgiving. Forgiveness frees ones own heart.

She told me that God doesn’t forgive without repentence, and we shouldn’t either.

Who told you this and what is the circumstance? That is if you care to share it.

A friend of mine on myspace. We were on her chatroom and she stated she won’t forgive unless the person repents.

I would say that is stepping into the unknown. How does she claim to know the heart and mind of God? One should repent out of love for God versus fear of being not forgiven. One should forgive his neighbor out of love as well.

She’s very prideful, and boasted that she will one day judge angels and the world.🤷

…Wow. That’s… um… very amusing. I really shouldn’t laugh at that, but… wow.

Why does she think that?
there’s a passage in the NT where Paul says ‘you will judge angels and the world’., or something. But she totally takes it out of context.

It sounds more like a case of “I’m right no matter what”, which is a sin of pride, and possibly non-sexual lust, the lust of wanting something a lot, as well.

I’m no stranger to the demon of pride. God wants us to be confident, but satan has made a counterfeit of this resulting in pride. God created natural sexual desire for pleasure and procreation within marriage. Satan has counterfeited it, creating lust. Every good thing God makes for us, satan has his counterfeit.

We probably shouldn’t get fixated on any one quote. The theme of forgiveness is basic to Judeo-Christian thought. The Church teaches it.🙂

Funny, I was in this discussion the other day as well with a CRHP brother.

His position: we are only called to forgive if forgiveness is sought.

Mine: no conditions, we are called to forgive.

In the Ask An Apoologist forum, the apologist says we are not commanded to forgive unrepentant sinners. I’m not convinced by the argument myself, but that’s what it says.
