Due to a couple of factors, I forgot to say my penance, and therefore forgot what exactly it was. Should I mention this to the priest in my next confession?

My advice is to talk to Father before or after Mass.

Yeah. You should mention that you didn’t do it. But I mean what is the normal penance that you get? Just do that twice, right?

If you genuinely forgot what the penance was you just do another penance. a prayer for example. As long as you do a penance even if you forgot what the original one was you don’t need to talk to the priest about it.

^This.

I might add, that sometimes people have a tendency to get too wrapped up with the Form of our faith, while not paying attention to the Function…For example, they do their penance because they know the book rules of the requirement for the format and components of the Sacrament, but just go through the motions without a properly disposed heart…so some, sadly, probably do penance without spiritual thought or contemplation, but are just partaking in the Sacrament “by the numbers”.

So, as the poster stated, to another penance, thoughtfully and reverently.

Peace and all good!

Thistle, as usual, spot on.

This question comes up in our RCIA program and in our PRE classes. In both cases, we teach basically the same thing, a reasonable penance substituted. We also say to mention it during your next confession and to state what you substituted. Fr. says that it may not be needed; however, doesn’t hurt.

My suggestion for the adults, spend an extra hour in adoration, we’re blessed in our parish to have the Sacrament exposed during adoration… Fr. usually gives the thumbs-up for the suggestion 🙂
