Is there a place where I can find the form of the Mass before the Tridentine Mass, so some time in the early 1500s or before (I think)?

There have been many rites which were used, as far as I know, up until Trent, there was not one standard liturgy for the Roman church.

For instance some religious orders had their own rites, carmelite rite, carthusian rite and others. Some different countries had their own rites. The carthusians still use a carthusian rite and in Milan the Ambrosian rite is still used.

You would need to search on the internet to find all about quite a complicated history of the various liturgies.

Here is one link that might help you to start

It will take much research. In general there are:
  • 1470-1570: 14 printed editions with variations Milan, Venice, Paris and Lyon
  • 1481-1738: 16 printed editions Parisian Missal

Small correction … There was not one star are liturgy for the Latin Church, not the Roman Church. The Roman Church has ALWAYS used the Roman Rite. However, the Latin Church used several different Latin Rites (which the Roman Rite is part of).

The “Roman Church” is the Diocese of Rome. The Latin Church is all “Western Catholicism” which is today tip locally considered “Roman Catholic”

The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostum, still in use in many of our Eastern Churches, dates back to the 4th or 5th century.

This liturgy is different than used in the Western Church, however, I think you’ll find the similarities between a 5th Century Eastern Liturgy, Tridentine mass, and 21st century novus ordo mass very interesting.

I was stricken more by the similarities than the differences.

The Sarum Rite is what was used in my part of the world. This became the basis for the Book of Common Prayer which in turn became the basis for the Ordinariate Use Mass. This I think has a certain symmetry to it.

Peace…interesting to know there were so many Rites, and that individual Orders would have their own Rite. angeltime:crossrc:

In the west- Different regions and religious orders had their own form of Latin liturgy, all related and with similarities.

It is important to understand that Trent did not create a new liturgy but only made the Roman Use (the liturgy of Rome Italy) a Universal liturgy for the western Church (how it ended up supplanting other usages is a different subject, that wasn’t the intent). The pre-Trent Roman Mass is essentially identical to the Mass of Trent. The Franciscans adopted the Roman Liturgy as their form, so consulting the pre-Trent Franciscan Missals is probably the most readily available source of pre-Trent Roman Mass (if that’s what you’re wondering about).

Pax et Bonum! Being I have strong ties to the Franciscans, I am very interested to learn this; never came up before in any conversation. Tks for the info…I will see about getting a pre-Trent Franciscan Missal. angeltime[BIBLEDRB][/BIBLEDRB]
