Have any of you converted to Catholicism from Protestantism? What was your experience? I would appreciate prayer as I am on this journey.
I have found that the tenants of Protestantism are faulty and can no longer blindly accepted all I used to believe. (Justification by faith alone was the first to fall. After that was brought down, I have begun to see the problems with sola scriptura.) But I’m still struggling with many of the other typical issues that protestants have with Catholics. I feel as if I am stuck, unable to turn back yet unsure of moving forward. I also fear that perhaps my search is driven by emotions, circumstances or the desire to rid myself of the fundamentalist cult I left. It is this fear that makes me wonder if I am doing wrong by seeking out Catholicism and that I will end up embracing a false doctrine (ie. Catholicism) and lose a walk with Christ. Did anyone who converted to Catholicism go through the same fears of being dreadfully wrong? How did you know that it was the Holy Spirit guiding you and not your own desires? Thank you for your prayers!

Hello and welcome to CAF! I am in the process of converting from being a Methodist. But I have alot of Baptist in my family and going back several generations. How may I help you?

What prompted you, or what was the turning point that convinced you to convert to Catholicism? Did you struggle with certain doctrines? If so how did you work through them without the fear that you may be throwing away truth and going against the Holy Spirit in doing so?

My friend. How much of Ancient Church History do you know?
Methodists and mainline Baptists, including others know that their denominations can trace back to Catholicism.
The Holy Spirit has never left The Catholic Church. People did.
The doctrines I struggled with…hhhmmm…i cannot think of any right now. I think perhaps not being Sola Scriptura has been a bit difficult. But the more I study, the more I understand why tradition is also important.
What prompted me? The Trinity did. And sitting in Mass or Adoration in front of The Blessed Sacrament. JESUS is truly there, my friend. I can feel it.

I accidently pushed “reply” too early. Please read above.

What parts are you struggling with in your journey to Catholicism?

I’m beginning to search out church history, and am amazed at how “Catholic” the early church fathers seem. Do you have solid resources that you could recommend. My fear is coming across a resource that is biased one way or another. I was taught that Baptists do not trace their history back to Catholicism and that Catholicism originated with Constantine not Christ. I’m trying to find truth about these statements.
Right now the two biggest issues I’m struggling with are the Marian doctrines and what seems to me to have been major corruption in the church (recent sex scandal, issues such as the inquisition and such.) I left a previous church due to spiritual abuse and covered up sexual abuse. I don’t want to embrace something that is corrupt. (Then again every denomination has had its issues, so how does one find genuine faith?)

“Rome Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn is an excellant book to help you. You could also visit The Coming Home Network, and EWTN!!
Those three definately helped. Oh and “Catholicism for Dummies,” is a very helpful resource, too. 😊
The Catholic Church is not corrupt. People are. Pope Francis has put in major reforms. 😊

Hmmm I could be wrong about Baptist origins. However before Martin Luther came along, the main Christian group in the western world was Roman Catholic. Which was founded by Jesus Christ.

Thank you, I just began reading Rome Sweet Home! Much of the inner turmoil and seeking that he went through I can relate with.

Almost every evening at this time 8 p.m. EST USA–EWTN has a wonderful show called Journey Home. The guy is a convert and he has other people from every denomination and some of no denomination tell their story of coming to the Catholic church. Many, Many tell of feelings like you have of choosing Catholic and losing a walk with Christ. Their stories are So interesting.

I’m praying for you. I think God is calling you… check out EWTN…

Thank you, how do you listen to it? Is it on the radio or online. I live in WI.

I get it on TV… It’s free and I think it’s even with an antenna… cable or satellite… You can probably watch it online, too!!!
Look it up, Journey Home. My husband was raised Presbyterian and he is anti catholic. I watch these shows and wish he would watch because the stories are fantastic. Our priest is former Anglican Priest and now Catholic Priest.

I’ve been there! Over 50 years a BAptist, I came into the Catholic Church Easter 2017. Lead by the HS, I realized certain Bible verses did not say what I had been taught, that the Catholic Church was correct regarding the Eucharist. Sola Scriptura wasn’t scriptural! I started reading and watching EWTN. Regarding Mary, I remind myself that we cannot love her more than her Son. I was surprised to see her referenced throughout scripture. I privately panicked a bit the week before Easter Vigil, so I went to Adoration and prayed. I’ve never doubted since. I have always desired a deeper relationship with Christ, and I have finally found it. It deepens day by day. Read Scott Hahn’s Hail Holy Queen. Have you attended Mass yet?

No, I have not been able to attend Mass yet, but I despteratley want to!! I have to wait until I am not in school (my spring break). I go to a Baptist University. If they find out that I went to Mass I wll be kicked out of college.
However, over the Christmas break I did go to a Catholic church just to pray and read scripture. Interestingly enough, I opened my Bible to Job 26: 2,3 which says, “How you have helped him who has no power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! How you have counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge!”

Seriously? They will kick you out for attending Mass? Pretty sure that is not legal.😐
