As a Mormon convert the biggest thing to overcome was the Pelagian heresy (basically Sanctifying Grace not needed for salvation) that is so heavily embedded in Mormon theology. The whole idea of “testing” in the Mormon church is about how well you overcome difficulties, not how grace provides the means to overcome difficulties.
It might be good to look up the Church’s arguments against the Pelagian heresy to get the errors of Mormonism cleared out of your mind.
Also, meditation on the Sacred Heart of Jesus works for me.
