Former Mormons: Have you had to deal with this residual effect?

As a Mormon convert the biggest thing to overcome was the Pelagian heresy (basically Sanctifying Grace not needed for salvation) that is so heavily embedded in Mormon theology. The whole idea of “testing” in the Mormon church is about how well you overcome difficulties, not how grace provides the means to overcome difficulties.

It might be good to look up the Church’s arguments against the Pelagian heresy to get the errors of Mormonism cleared out of your mind.

Also, meditation on the Sacred Heart of Jesus works for me.

Hi Marie,
I to am a former mormon. I became Catholic in 2005. I also, find old thought patterns popping back, particulary during hard times. I’ve found the idea of redemptive sufferibg, uniting our suffering with Jesus to be helpful. I sometimes wonder if there will ever be a time when I don’t have to think about things, that they just come naturrally. I think we all go through stuff like this. I guess at some point we all just need to turn to God and ask him for help.

Marie, turn to Mary, the first convert to Christ. Pray for the intercession of our Mary Magdalene, a convert. We are not alone in our journey. Many of strong faith have made the journey before us.

Hi Marie, Mary Magdalene is the patroness of the SLC diocese, which encompasses all of Utah. She is also the Saint I chose as my patron at baptism. She is called Friend of God and apostle to the Apostles. St. Anselm wrote a beautiful prayer to her, and he also wrote this:

O my God teach my heart where and how to seek you,
where and how to find you…

You are my God and you are my All and I have never seen you.
You have made me and remade me,
You have bestowed on me all the good things I possess,
Still I do not know you…

I have not yet done that for which I was made….
Teach me to seek you…

I cannot seek you unless you teach me
or find you unless you show yourself to me.
Let me seek you in my desire, let me desire you in my seeking.
Let me find you by loving you, let me love you when I find you.

I’m going thru some tough times right now. You know “life stuff” of the very painful sort.

I keep hearing the Mormon loop of “this life is a test”, that stems from the Mormon view of the plan of salvation. That we, as spirit children, are sent to earth to be tested and tried.

It gets in my way of seeing God right now as being a merciful and loving God who is there to help in times of need. Im stuck on “God is testing me, trying me”…

Does any of this make sense? Any thoughts or advise?

ETA: I’m stuck in this mode of I have to prove something to God.

Who said that God is not being merciful and loving amid the things you are going through?
I know we were never promised that life would be a cake walk, so to speak. We would and do have difficult days. I know the trials we are going through are toughen us and refine us.
