You can read about the whole thing in the book *Disinformation *written by Pacepa and Ronald J. Rychlak. I just finished it, in fact. The end of the book is a small book in itself with notes, references, and a bibliography. I do not believe this can be just written off.

Yes, while there are a narrow set of circumstances when disinformation has a legitimate basis, all too often it is used as a tool of and for ‘evil’ or ‘malevolent’ purpose.

Discernment is the foe of disinformation.

Extremely unconvincing. I’m sure the Soviets saw liberation theology as their friend, but it’s a long way from there to the claim that they created it.

Okay. Really, for me, it’s hard to tell. Though… there was quite heavy Soviet influence in Central and South American countries (along with Carribbean nations) during the Cold War. That’s quite well known. These are the same countries that had large followings of “Liberation Theology”. Whether it was developed by the Soviets or not, Liberation Theology appears almost as a “Trojan Horse” of sorts that tried to infiltrate Catholicism with Marxist ideology, knowing that in areas of deep popular faith, it would have been extremely difficult to get the people to go along with completely outlawing religion. Remember what happened in Mexico after the Mexican Revolution - the new secularist government tried to outlaw Catholicism and ended up faced with the populist Cristillo (I’m not exactly sure of the name) rebellion. Liberation Theology was an attempt at undermining the Catholic faith without outright outlawing it. The idea was that the people wouldn’t tolerate outlawing the Catholic faith but could be convinced that some (or even most) Marxist ideologies were Catholic.
